MY DARLING CLEMENTINE - Blu–ray & DVD Editions
John Ford (Stagecoach) takes on the legend of the O.K. Corral shoot-out in this multilayered, exceptionally well-constructed western, one of the director’s very best films. Henry Fonda (Young Mr. Lincoln) cuts an iconic figure as Wyatt Earp, the sturdy lawman who sets about the task of shaping up the disorderly Arizona town of Tombstone, and Victor Mature (Violent Saturday) gives the performance of his career as the boozy, tubercular gambler and gunman Doc Holliday. Though initially at cross-purposes, the pair ultimately team up to confront the violent Clanton gang. Affecting and stunningly photographed, My Darling Clementine is a story of the triumph of civilization over the Wild West from American cinema’s consummate mythmaker.

Oh Happy Day for Crawdaddy.  First-day purchase for me.

Few things...

First, I want to thank Crawdaddy for introducing this western

to me.  Bought it on DVD many moons ago.  Saw it once. Loved it!

I am so happy enough time has gone by that I will enjoy it fresh on

Blu-ray a second time.

Second, it seems Fox has been taking a huge interest in HTF member

requests as far as getting these catalog titles out.  This is one of the

titles that were discussed with Schan Belston at our last visit to Fox

studios.

Third, it's amazing that I am actually enticed to buying so many Criterion

titles first day.  This is my second western that I am purchasing at full price.

I was a little surprised that Criterion is getting this Fox classic, but I'm just delighted it's finally going to see the light of Blu-ray day!

Just as shocked that Fox farmed this out as I was with All That Jazz.

I suppose Fox doesn't have confidence as to how well they could sell

these titles on their own.

This has been one of my favorites.

However, with a 10/14 release, and with the B&N sale normally in November, I might have the will power to wait a few weeks (or not)

They just posted on Amazon in the past 30 minutes but you

cannot order them yet.  I am keeping an eye on the site hourly.

I'll post preorders here once they allow it.

Linda Darnell. High-def. Sold.

According to Tag Gallagher's terrific book, Ford was unhappy at Darryl F. Zanuck's insistence that Linda Darnell get a lot of close ups.  My guess is that that is why her name in the film is from a dog (Chihuahua) and Ford had Henry Fonda throw her in a horse trough.

1. I really like that Criterion got Tag Gallagher to do a commentary (essay) for this release.  His book on Ford is the best book on film I have ever read and really crystalized my interest in Ford.

2. With Stagecoach, Red River, and now My Darling Clementine, Criterion really has a series of the top westerns.  As they have a deal with Universal, can Destry Rides Again be far behind?

I wouldn't bet against it since I just bought the German BD of it along with My Darling Clementine German BD.  Might as well be two for two.

I'm probably going to wait a bit on this one since I watched one of the two DVDs I won of it recently. That said, I'm sure this blu will hit my collection eventually.

Pre-Ordered!

Now you listen to me, I'm an advertising man, not a red herring. I've got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that depend upon me, and I don't intend to disappoint them all by getting myself "slightly" killed.  Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant), Hitchcock's North By Northwest (1959)
