Agreed! All of the many roadshow versions should eventually be issued on DVD and Blu-ray paired on 2 disc sets along with their shorter counterparts and bonus material.

The one 70 millimeter Roadshow that I'd love to have wasn't even released on standard DVD! I'm talking about Song Of Norway (1970). I'm not holding my breath but if a musical disaster like At Long Last Love made it to blu, why not Song Of Norway?

Other missing in action 70 mm roadshows: The Alamo, Around The World In 80 Days, Barabbas, The Big Fisherman, Can-Can, Cheyenne Autumn, Custer Of The West, Greatest Story Ever Told, The Hallelujah Trail, Krakatoa East Of Java, MacKenna's Gold, Raintree County, Ryan's Daughter, Star!, Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm.

Several like Circus World, Doctor Dolittle, Exodus, 55 Days At Peking, Lord Jim are available in regions 2 and 4.

"Song of Norway" was released on standard def DVD in the UK several years ago - long OOP of course - but the quality was said to be lacking.

It was a pan and scan transfer as I recall and without the roadshow trimmings (overture, intermission card, etc.)

The Big Fisherman was on one of the cable movie channels the other day (can't recall if it was TCM or Fox Movie Channel), but it was distressingly presented in pan and scan, so I quickly flipped the channel.

Although THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD is indeed available on Blu-Ray, I would agree that it is "missing in action". It is easily the worst quality Blu-Ray I own that was from an authorized source. Given that its spectacular cinematography is one of the major assets of the film, this disc is truly a heartbreaker.

And I agree about SONG OF NORWAY. It's a guilty pleasure of mine. I thought I read years ago about a company doing restoration work on the film for Disney in preparation for a U.S. home video release. Would enjoy a quality widescreen release.

Don't hold your breath on a couple of then. For as with The Alamo, MGM/UA controls Song of Noraway, Krakatoa East of Java, Hallelujah Trail and The Greatest Story Ever Told. Of course there was a Blu of The Greatest Story Ever Told, but it needs to be replaced as the transfer is deplorable. Mr. Lime on the Kino Thread as indicated there are major problems with the existing transfer of Hallelujah Trail.

Ideally, roadshow to me means 65mm neg or Technirama 70 but not 35mm or 70mm blow ups from standard 35mm, so some of the above I'd disqualify!

I guess it's all a matter of opinion. To me Roadshow means a reserved ticket and seat performance. All the films from my list were seen in such circumstances. A Man For All Seasons played for more than 8 months at the Fine Arts Theater in NY. The Lion in Winter played at a cinema on 57th Street reserved tickets. El Cid played for months at the Warner. Judgment at Nuremberg played at the Palace. The Music Lovers was seen reserved seats in the UK (in 70mm blowup with spectacular sound!). And Roman Empire blasted away at The DeMille. Of course that was a bygone era as all of the Theaters mentioned are long gone(except The Palace).

I'd love AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, BARABBAS, RAINTREE COUNTY, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, THE BIG FISHERMAN and LORD JIM (French one is costly). As Paul noted "to me Roadshow means a reserved ticket and seat performance". The films went "on the road" in reserved seat venues before a general release that sometimes included cuts to shorten playing times.
