Hello Experts,
I am setting up a home theater in my living room(great room), that opens to dining area and that opens to the kitchen.
I bought a Pioneer VSX 70 Elite AV receiver. My TV is mounted above the fireplace (not ideal but works OK)
Which of the following would be the best setup ?
1. Promonitor 800 for front left and front right(mounted on stands/on the wall on either sides of the fireplace), pro monitor 1000 for the center(on the fireplace mantle), DI 6.5R for rear channels(in ceilings).
2. DI6.5R for front left, front right and rear channels along with Pro 1000 for the center(this goes on the fireplace mantle).
3. DI6.5R for all five channels.

I am thinking of getting a Pro 800 sub.

I have 10 ft ceiling in my living room. Here is the layout.

I have labelled where the TV and the couch are.

Thank you everyone in advance.

Are you limited on what size enclosure you can use? Because I don't consider an 8" driver a home sub. You will have to fill that entire space with low end before you get any type of tactile sensation. If you aren't going for that then the Def Tech sub is probably fine.

Do not do in-ceiling on all channels. There is no other option but 1.I concur...more sub. Unless this is an apartment with lots of neighbors, especially downstairs.

I have another newbie question(below), which I might ask in a separate thread.
I see that the frequency range of procinema 600 is 55Hz to 30KHz. The frequency range of Promonitor 800 is 57 Hz to 30kHz. If I get a good subwoofer and set a crossover frequency of lets say 100Hz, would I get same performance from either the pro600 or the pro800, since the receiver would be sending anything less than 100hz to the sub woofer ?

Is my understanding incorrect here?

Or does a bigger speaker actually deliver the same range of frequencies in a better crisp sound?

I do not plan to drive the speakers at a very high volume. I am looking for something that delivers crisp and clear sound.

Thanks again!!

We sometimes go through a lot of time and effort to recommend something to a newcomer that hasn't filled out the location in their profile and then they mention they live in a grass hut in Africa. Shipping would be too expensive. But now we know you are in the US so 99.9% of our recommendations will be available.

Sub - Get the biggest your budget and room layout will allow. Powersound, Hsu and SVS are all great companies but not the complete list of subs we recommend.

All things being equal - yes. But not all things are equal. Look at the sensitivity rating. The 800 is a little higher meaning it will take fewer watts of power to push the speaker to your desired listening levels. Def Tech provides the frequency range but gives no standard deviation. I can make my sub play 20hz to 20,000 hz but the high end will be down about 100db. If a speaker manufacturer gives the range plus a + or - value of 3db then there is only a max variation of 6db across the entire range of sound being reproduced. That's good. + or - 1db is awesome. + or - 10db is bad. None given makes me think they are trying to hide something.
Or does a bigger speaker actually deliver the same range of frequencies in a better crisp sound?
The best answer is maybe. It's a way to general question.
I do not plan to drive the speakers at a very high volume. I am looking for something that delivers crisp and clear sound.
That's a very subjective statement. A lot of people like Klipsch speakers for their crisp sound. I think they sound harsh. What you like in a speaker is very similar to food. Not everyone likes the same dishes but that doesn't make one or the other bad.

That would depend on your AVR...which you have an Elite.

Pio/Elite have a single crossover point. Others have multiple...

For you, the difference is the efficiency...88 for the 600. 89 for the 800. No 1db is not Earth shattering...but it means your AVR will provide roughly 1/3 less power(at full volume) to the 800...meaning...more headroom(which is a good thing).

I asked...cause ID(Internet Direct) subs are the best bargains...unless you have good wood working skills...

Or if you can build a kit...

http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-t1504k-15-titanic-mk-4-1000-watt-subwoofer-kit--300-764 (nothing $800 from Hsu is going to touch it)

Or if you got mad skills...

http://www.parts-express.com/re-audio-xxx15-v2-2-15-cast-frame-dvc-subwoofer-driver-2-2-ohm--268-8152 and a trip to Home Depot.

$300 DIY budget:
250w plate amp - $125 - http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-spa250-250-watt-subwoofer-plate-amplifier--300-803
12" sub - $104 - http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dvc310-88-12-dvc-series-subwoofer--295-185
2 ports - $27 - http://www.parts-express.com/precision-port-3-flared-speaker-cabinet-port-tube-kit--268-350
MDF - $35 from Lowes or Home Depot.
plans - http://creativesound.ca/pdf/SubDuction-plans-290307.pdf

If you want to use the sealed plans, then skip the ports. But the ported version is similar to the Hst VTF-2 in performance.

Any sub matches any speakers.

But yeah, I'd take the STF 1 over the Pro 800.
Would "NXG Technology NX-BAS-500 12" 500-watt Powered Subwoofer" be a better choice for the sub?
http://www.nxgtechnology.com/subwoofers.html

At this point Def Tech pro sub 800 is out.
I am thinking between HSU STF 1 vs NX-BAS-500.
Or I can stretch to STF 2 if it would be significantly better.

Please advice!!

First I've heard of nxg. From reviews it seems like a slightly more refined BIC F12.Supposedly you shouldn't pay more than $260 for it.Does a "refined F12 at $260" beat a STF 1?To me...no.

I have both the STF-1 and the STF-2, and while I love them, I can definitely say that the STF-1 is not powerful enough for that size room. It has an 8" driver and is mean for a small study. (I liked it better when HSU set room sizes for their speakers; I'm guessing they did away with that because they were losing too many sales to companies that didn't mention maximum room size.)
