I have two TVs; a fairly new Samsung LN-T5271F and an older Visio M261VP.

Both TVs have a USB port and embedded WiFi.

On my home network, I have a Linux server and Windows 7 PC which could be used to stream video if necessary.

Am I able to watch either a MP4 or AVI file on either of these televisions?

If so, how would I implement it?

Thank you

The manual for the Visio doesn't say much. I plugged in a USB, and the only thing I can seem to access is photos and music.

Any thoughts about streaming video on a local network?

EDIT. Probably not an option, but the Visio has a Comcast modem attached to it which has a USB connection. Possibility?

And your Samsung is already set up to work with WMP 11/12.

(And once you set up your WMP for MP4 and AVI, cause WMP needs set up...like everything else, the PC simply sends the video over)

The Win7 PC is a HP Pavilion p6267c-b.

The Linux server is a HP Pavilion p7-1597c. A bit of work to swap machines, but I suppose that is an option.

I also have a HP Pavilion dv7-6113cl laptop running Win7.

How do I know if it any of these machines have WiDi (Wireless Display)?

Your DV7 has Intel WiDi 2.0 (there is, or was, a sticker on the left of the track pad).

Netgears PTV works with it(there are others...but I have the first gen PTV and a DV6 with WiDi).

Since the other is a tower, WiDi is not on board(not sure...but I think WiDi is laptop only...could be wrong...I haven't had a tower computer in 12 years).

I set this up on my parents' house. I chose Plex Media Server for Debian Linux (Ubuntu instructions will be same or similar). Then grab a raspberry pi and an hdmi cable and instal Plex Home Theater on it (Rasplex). team the rasplex up with a cheap remote from ebay and you're golden. All through ethernet or wireless. Plex is also very user friendly so if you have non-tech people using it, they will love Plex. My stepmom is technically challenged and can use Plex with ease.

Does your TV accept MP4 or AVI videos as supported formats? If not, you'd better transcode it to the optimized format for your TV beforehand.
