Did not see a thread for this so thought I would start one, as this is one of my favorite summer shows.

I was delighted to discover that they had ditched all of the open audition rounds and got right down to business in the MasterChef kitchen. This is a lesson that American Idol should have learned years ago.

Good opener overall, I thought. Too early to pick any favorites, but I'm already rooting for that loudmouth from Malibu to turn in his apron.

I love most cooking competition shows. I don't start threads on all the competition shows I enjoy (InkMaster, Top Chef, Face/Off) but I tend to go for things where the judgement is easier to point out to the audience (for me) in comparison to music/singing shows.MasterChef has always worked for me. I like the nature of the show which allows the chefs to both teach and appreciate the unique style of home cooks. Unlike ABC's terrible attempt at this (The Taste) this show has a lot of inbuilt drama but it keeps a really lighthearted, good nature to it.I mean, who wasn't rooting for a blind chef to win it all? Or the unbelievably cute/hot Whitney in Season 1 to Christine Ha and Luca..I mean, out of all of the 'competition' shows, MasterChef works for me in a way that a lot just don't.. you see people learn their craft, improve and compete where what the judges say give you real hints as to what this means.

I'm glad to have Master Chef back.
My girlfriend and I are both watching it.

We both like the guy who made the ramen soup.
And a dark horse is that gentlemen's club girl who made the noki.

Yeah, that's the kind of backstory that will keep a contestant around even after a bad dish or two. :)

Leslie (Mr. Malibu) the one with greyish/whitish hair and was a pompous ass.
He's one that will definitely be the hated one in the group like the one young kid from two seasons ago.

I'm not a fan of any "reality" show, but I do watch Hell's Kitchen and MasterChef as sort of a compromise for my wife (beats the hell out of having to watch any of the Real Housewives shows, which, to quote Jack Nicholson in Terms of Endearment, I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than do that). I can tolerate these two shows, but I have the following complaints, which always falls on deaf ears with my wife, so I'll get them out of my system here: 1) I HATE when Ramsey (and/or, in the case of MasterChef, the other 2 guys) pretends to be kicking out one of the contestants and then reverses himself with a usually moronic statement that lets them know they're still in, and, especially, 2), when they allow one of the contestants that has been dismissed on a previous show to re-enter the contest, which is not only grossly unfair to the other contestants, but is a slap in the face to the viewer who wasted his or her time watching that contestant lose in the first place.

I'm a fan of Ramsey so this is a show I always watch as well as Hell's Kitchen. I also just started with Kitchen Nightmares so I've probably watched 15 episodes of it this past week on Hulu. I'm never good at guessing the winners of these shows but I will say that I was amazed at how much weight Graham (sp?) lost.

That's the thing my girlfriend and I were amazed about with Graham Elliot.
He looks so different and not even like him.
Looks like a total different person.

Here's the news on Graham.
After losing 150 pounds since undergoing a sleeve gastrectomy,
He's running a 10k race.

I was wondering about him. Haven't watched this in a couple of seasons, but am giving this one a try.Wow, did he look different. Hope things work out and he can keep the weight off, a lot of people fall right back to bad habits.

That kid from season 2, his name was Max Kramer (18yrs old)
And Even Christian from season 3 will be in this same league.

I remember the guy. If I'm correct he was an arrogant jerk, thought he was very "privileged" and better than anybody else around him. Little rich kid, had cooked in Paris, etc. Very glad he was booted quickly.

I'm liking Big Willie.
Courtney looks very sharp, and is turing from my dark horse to my favorite.
Dan (ramen soup guy) is still a contender for me, but better shape up quickly and loose the cockiness.

Still flguring out who I like and who I don't. :) There are still some contestants who have received almost no camera time, so I'm guessing they'll be among the early eliminations.

Courtney really laid some smack down, not only in winning but in her blunt assessments of her competitors. And her face would certainly look good on a cookbook cover.

Leslie is an annoying ass..who has been living off his wife's salary. Big Willie reminds me of Fat Albert...because of this colorful clothing. Lol

Leslie is annoying, but it appears he was right about going with steak over chicken. I may have about 5% of the cooking skills and experience of the people in this competition, so I wonder why every season some of them make such basic mistakes.

I don't know if they're trying to manufacture more petty conflicts, or they are just casting nastier people, but Ahren certainly didn't come off well last night. One of the reasons I like this show is it features people with actual skills who are there to demonstrate their cooking prowess and not mug for the cameras. But with every passing season it seems like there's more boorish behavior in the MasterChef kitchen.

I liked the donut challenge, though, and Leslie is starting to impress me, with his cooking if not always with his attitude.

I'm apparently now just talking to myself in this thread, but so be it.

Look, Leslie can be abrasive, and I was ready for him to go after episode 1, but now I think he's being unfairly portrayed as the villain. Ahren was an immature brat in this episode, and I have no issue with anything Leslie said to her. I've had my name mispronounced plenty of times, and there are much better ways to react when that happens. He was an ineffective leader but once again he proved himself in the challenge where it counts.

I have been thinking the same and I hope this doesn't turn into another Hells Kitchen. They are trying to create conflict instead of letting the cooking do the talking. For example, letting Lesley pick who to do the challenge and then saying no, we'll pick them. Just stirring things up. I also think they keep people longer just for the conflict. Hells Kitchen originally had compitant people competing and now, quoting Joel McHale, they just have "out of shape smokers". Notice we didn't see auditions this year. They are picking who they want. Granted, there is still alot of skill there, but not what it was. I just hope it doesn't go further.

Ahren is a flat out whiny b*tch, way to young to be in a competition like this, still holding onto her petty teen attitude. I had some respect for her with the previous week's episode, but she did a complete 180 and devolved into shallow teen selfishness. "You're not pretty enough, you're to old, ew...." Give it a rest sweetheart.

Leslie can be a jerk, he brought that upon himself, but he can cook. To bad he choked as a leader, Ramsey will remember that. I don't see him winning this, to many young people against him, but I'm starting to like him. There are still a couple of amazing cooks, let's hope they survive the whiners like Ahren and Courtney.
Haven't watched Hell's Kitchen for many years, filled with tacky, rude people who all look like they were just released from prison. If Masterchef goes that road, I'm done watching.
