Never saw this film, but just ordered it blindly.

I know it's a Best Picture winner and starring Ernest Borgnine.

Always wanted to see this. Now I can on Blu-ray in July.

Ron,

I preordered this title yesterday. I think you'll enjoy it. It's a drama that is slanted towards the man/bachelor point of view and though it might be dated somewhat, there are certain things in this film that are current today.

This movie was written by the great Paddy Cheyevsky, who gave us "Network" in 1976 and won his 2nd Oscar for that amazing piece of cinematic literature...and Ernie Borgnine gave the performance of his career for this character...I think you'll find this very much to your liking, Ron!!!

We provided the documentation to Kino and you'll be seeing MARTY for the first time in widescreen since the original theatrical release!

Network was Chayefsky's third Oscar - following Marty and The Hospital in 1971.

This film was based on a 1953 Teleplay that saw release on Laserdisc & I think DVD. The TV film, Queen of the Stardust Ballroom(1975) with the late Maureen Stapleton is is considered a role reversal of Marty.

I understand that the DVD version of Marty(1955) had a sequence cut from the film but that the scene appeared in the VHS version. I did put the PAL VHS I had onto DVD just in case. Any clues on this incident?

In watching all 494 Best pic Noms, this was one I did NOT like. I felt the film ended abruptly (like they ran out of money). I'll still buy it for my collection, though!

If I had to rank every Best Picture winner I've seen, this one would be on the top 10. Pure human observation, without an ounce of excessive sentimentality and no histrionics from any of the cast. A most affecting story of love, yearning and loneliness, accomplished with just the necessary tools (technically and story-wise).

I pre-ordered this in a nano-second -- my idol Ernest Borgnine (along with Laurel and Hardy, Lemmon and Matthau and Sharon Tate) -- Ronald, it's a great movie, certainly one of its time. You could never remake this movie as is, it wouldn't work -- it is like looking through a window to Brooklyn 1954, with the great on-location filming and a platoon of great performances -- Betsy Blair, Joe Mantell (20 years before he had to tell Jack Nicholson to 'forget it Jake, its Chinatown', in this movie he has another iconic one line 'Whaddya want to do tonight?") and a quick unbilled cameo from screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky in the backseat of a car.

And absolutely Bob, in its correct aspect ratio for the first time on home video -- in fact, since I got a bluray player with a aspect/zoom adjuster, I've been watching this movie on dvd in the OAR since you uncovered the fact that "Plan 9 from Outer Space" had never been seen in its correct aspect since it played theatrically. It is amazing seeing these movies filmed 'open matte' and playing them on a widescreen, one of the benefits of being on this Forum and learning from the experts.

I don't know if there are any extras with this Kino release -- other than newsreel footage from the Oscars in 1956 and various trailers (one featuring producer Burt Lancaster), can't think of anything other than the 1953 original tv version with Rod Steiger that one could include -- the movie had a great poster and logo artwork (that 'phone booth' logo is genius -- you know exactly what the movie is from that line drawing). There was also a half sheet poster featuring positive comments about the movie from various movie stars from Martin and Lewis and Charlton Heston. If they're hard up trying to find extras, I'd simply include the great TCM 'Private Screenings' special on Ernest from 2009 where he talks about his entire career as well as a great deal about 'Marty'

I know we've been laying into MGM on this Forum lately (with good reason, sadly), but would it have killed them to get Ernest, most of the main cast (who lived into their 80s and some, mid 90s!) along with Delbert Mann and have them all in a recording studio for 94 minutes and do a commentary track? Another lost opportunity, gone forever.

I applaud Kino for bringing these movies out on bluray -- another great movie directed by Delbert Mann is out the same day, "Separate Tables" with Burt Lancaster, Rita Hayworth, Deborah Kerr and David Niven in his Academy Award winning role. A Delbert Mann boxset one day? Keep dreaming. In the meantime, try and find his autobiography, a great read.

Criterion released the TV version of Marty in a DVD set of classic television dramas several years ago. I reviewed it for HTF, and it was called The Golden Age of Television. It had the TV versions of No Time for Sergeants, Requiem for a Heavyweight, The Comedian, Patterns, The Days of Wine and Roses, and others.

On Marty, I have to agree with Cremildo;
Pure human observation, without an ounce of excessive sentimentality and no histrionics from any of the cast. A most affecting story of love, yearning and loneliness, accomplished with just the necessary tools (technically and story-wise).

Now, do we know whether this version will include the scene left out from the previous DVD? Glad to have Marty in its right OAR, but would like to have it complete as well.

There's a scene after Borgnine takes Betsy Blair home where she goes into her parent's bedroom to tell them about all that had happened to her that night. For some reason that was cut from the DVD release. I've never heard why. I hope it's been restored for this blu-ray release.
