Howdy all,
I'm currently working on creating a board game and ran into an issue. Since I know theres a lot of board game players on this forum I wondering if anyone had any tips.
I've run into an issue deciding where to place information on my cards. Currently were putting the attacks and attack information on one side (range, element, damage, and effects). On the other side is the name of the monster, type of monster, picture of monster, its strengths, it weaknesses, strength, health, speed, and rareness.
My question is whether I should keep it the way it is or put it all on one side. The benefit of keeping it the way it is, is space and the fact that the attacks are facing the player, so they dont have to keep looking at the front. The problem is that it takes away the random encounter factor because you can see the attacks and such on the back of the card sitting in the card stack.
So would it be too much trouble for the player to have to reference the front of the card for the attacks all the time?
(Cards are standing up in a stand in the game and this can not be changed. Currently the side with the attacks would face the player who owns it. If we switched it the attacks would be facing the opponent and no information would be facing the player who owns the card)

Sounds like the current card design is appropriate for the play mechanics. Simple solution to the random encounter factor: When a card is drawn, draw it from the *bottom* of the stack instead of the top. Another option would be to include a dummy card that always sits on top of the stack to cover it.

I think some games include a plastic caddy that lets you draw cards without seeing them, but that's a production decision. Hopefully you'll get to that point eventually! :)

IMO making players look at the backs of cards in stands would be a mistake. Doing it once doesn't sound like much, but playing a whole game that way would be really annoying.

Thanks for the input! I had never thought of just having the players draw from the buttom of the stack. We are going to go with that :)

Looks like you got the info you needed :) I didn't have any deep insights, but my reaction is a dislike towards double-sided cards. It's difficult to flip cards to get reference info needed every turn.

Also, it sounds like you're developing a complex game: "Currently were putting the attacks and attack information on one side (range, element, damage, and effects). On the other side is the name of the monster, type of monster, picture of monster, its strengths, it weaknesses, strength, health, speed, and rareness"

I count about 13 unique stats there for each card. As a casual player of games like Settlers and Stone Age, this feels...difficult. Maybe it's the norm for card games like Magic or NetRunner or other stats-based games; I'm not familiar with them. Play-testing should reveal if you've got too much data for your target player :)

We are are worried about the complexity of the game, but flipping the card back and forth won't be an issue. The reason its two sided is because your opponent needs info to keep you honest and you the player need info as well. The cards themselves will be standing up during battle. I've modified the template to have a bit of duplicate information on it to avoid the card flipping.

The game's target market is more of the people looking for an all night game like Talisman, Descent, or Arkham Horror. These games take between 2 1/2 to 4 hours to play through.
