Recommendation for a receiver (1 Viewer)

Hello experts,

I hope you can help me find a suitable sound system for my needs and budget. I am looking for a decent 7.1 or 7.2 receiver & speaker set around $1000. I have a 3D TV and next year I plan to upgrade to UHD, UN55HU8550. I don't have a dedicated HT room. My living/TV room is 11 x 15 feet and I have many neighbors around. What I really care about is to have realistic sounds. It doesn't have to be loud.

Last year I was thinking about Onkyo TX-NR709 but that is discontinued. Also, I am not sure if the receiver has to be compatible with 3D or UHD or HDMI 2.0. It seems HDMI 2.0 is the connector in UHD specification. All of these questions are making it difficult for me to find something.

The 709 was discontinued(like everything else from then...everybody else's AVR, TV, BD, DVD, shoes, cars) 3 years ago.

The "new" HDMI 2.0 is trickling now. Nobody has their whole line out yet.

The difference(relevant to UHD) from 1.4 to 2.0?

4K/60fps support.

Also, $1000 isn't nearly enough.

Don't know if you have a Fry's Electronics in your area, but through 5/1 they have an in- store special on the Yamaha RX-V577 for $299. That would be a good start on your budget.

I wonder how Fry is selling at that price point.

Thank you very much for all your input. Your feedback is very valuable to me. I checked the suggested receivers and they are all compatible with UHD. Now comes the hard question, what is your recommendation for a set of decent but not expensive speakers? I know this is hard question because I read in a thread that speakers are more important than receivers. Nevertheless I am hoping that you can recommend something in the range $600. Thank you

$600 for 2?$600 for 5?$600 for 5.1?$600 for 7.1?(And yes, I know your goal "is $1000", which is ridiculous. You are planning UHD, and unless your planned TV is a shitty Hisence...)

okay, I get it you don't think $600 is enough for speakers.

Here is my suggestion.

3 pairs of BIC DV62 (usually around $110/pair)
BIC DV62clrs or DV52clrs(if you don't have room for the 62)...$120/$75.

Leaves enough for a Dayton Sub1000/1200

Sure. Is it going to stay under your $600?

The DV64 is priced each...not pair.

I can raise my budget by a couple of hundred dollars. They will fit better on each side of the TV. Thank you again

Amazon has listed BICHT8C 8-inch for $59.99. Do you think that is a good option for that price? I know I will have to spend more money to have them installed but it may be worth it. I am not sure why they went from $199 to $59.99.

The front and side speakers are 2-way but the surrounds are 3 way. I hope that doesn’t represent a problem

I have alnost this exact setup except I run Dayton B652s for surrounds with an H/K AVR1700 running everything and it sounds great for movies and music. Might I suggest an H/K AVR1710 with BIC Formula series speakers

I actually placed my order just after my last post. HK AVR 1710 sounds nice but it doesn't have HDMI 2.0 to handle UHD. I am planning on getting a UHD TV next year and if I understand it correctly the receiver should be to handle the signal.

Cool, and yes, your AVR needs to be able to handle the signal. Congrats on the new purchase, I absolutely love my BIC/Dayton combo.

My suggestion would be:
Sony 470W Mini-HiFi System with iPod/iPhone Dock
Go for it and it would suit your budget too!
