House windows. They go up and down and have gotten really hard to open and close. Would WD40 be a good lubricant?

Be careful with what Evers you do choose. I have window they now won't stay open from lubrication.

I thought the film was Stiff Widows?

WD40 isn't a lubricant at all: it's a cleaner and water displacer (hence the name water displacer #40).

What are your windows made from? Aluminum, plastic, or wood?

WD40 can melt plastic but I think it's OK on metal. Wood -- maybe.

The trouble with lubricating the windows is, as Chris mentioned, that they might get too slick to stay open.

You might check for moisture in the surrounding wood. There could be something causing the wood to expand.

If it's aluminum you might try bike chain lube. Made to lube an aluminum bike chain, made to shed dirt... and if you're a biker, you probably already have some...

I've heard graphite from a pencil will work as a lube too on things like locks..

I use graphite to loosen up locks. You can buy tubes of powdered graphite for lube purposes. You don't need to grind down a pencil.

I originally read the title of this thread as sticking it to Microsoft.
I'm starting to thing I created the most misinterpreted thread title on the HTF. :)
