Any updates if Sony will release this film this year? So far the only pre-80's film announced by Sony for 2013 has been "Funny Girl" (Apr 30th)

I would have gladly endorsed a Blu-Ray that gives the consumer the *choice* to see their own preferred cut of the film that was *previously released in a home video format* whether that title is "1776" or any other title that falls in that category (we won't mention any other names though). But if the option isn't there, either because of lack of release or imperfect new release, then one simply must keep enjoying what one has, and every July 4, I still get plenty of enjoyment from the cut that gave me a great thrill when I first saw it on LD in 1991.

I hooked up the laserdisc player for the first time in over a decade and have started watching Joe's Pioneer Special Edition of 1776. I am enjoying it immensely, but I would enjoy even more a restored blu-ray edition.

Yeah, I know what a letdown it has been that we still don't have
a Blu-ray release on the horizon.

The only good news is that it hasn't been handed over to Twilight Time.
That's not a knock against that company, but rather a reason to be
optimistic. I believe Sony is still holding on to hope that they will get
a window of opportunity to do something special with this title sooner
or later. They are very much aware of the fanbase here and I think
every effort is being made not to hand over a vanilla release to another
distributor.

I'd like to say this would be a really good time to have a nice, fresh release of this film (what with the recent Boston bombings and word that more were planned for July 4th)--but I don't know that there'd ever be a bad time.

It always serves as such a great reminder of the trials and tribulations that went into the formation of the United States and so many of the civil and positive debates which led to this nation's creation.

I just finished the laserdisc, now I think I will watch the DVD. I understand it is 10 minutes shorter than the laserdisc, missing the overture and intermission music, but otherwise mostly intact with better quality overall. Weaker sound, according to Joe, though, so the laserdisc is not going anywhere.

I might just have to make a home-made DVD of the laserdisc, or one that adds the overture and intermission music to the anamorphic DVD.

weeks were spent on the dubbing stage mixing the 5.1 sound on the DVD, I've always preferred it. There is also additional material in the DVD cut that is missing from the LD (watch especially the end of Cool Men)The film was never ever intended to have an intermission (it didn't on stage) or Overture or Entr'acte...

The picture quality is quite good at 1080p. Disclosure, I am watching this on my smaller 57" HDTV. I'll try the large TV later.I miss the longer Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve and the reprise of The Lees of Old Virginia.You can even rent it from iTunes for $3.99. It's also available from Vudu. I'll bet you can upgrade from the DVD to HD for $5.So there is a decent HD master of the 166 minute version available.

I would assume that is either a new scan done for HDTV syndication (TCM etc) or something done back when the DVD Was made in 2002, but either way it would be based off that restoration. When work can resume on the film, I think you'll be happy with the result Steve.

If I could have a Blu-ray with those two small cuts put back in, I'd be one happy camper. I am more than satisfied with the cut on the DVD otherwise (and as you said, the DVD looks very good upconverted to 1080p).

No, but I did the disc to digital conversion in Vudu for $5, since I had the DVD. That's the cheapest way to own it.
