After seeing the film in the theater, i bought the soundtrack LP on my way home. Another masterpiece from Jerry Goldsmith.DP 70 said:One of the best film scores ever, hope the audio is from the 70mm 6-Track.
I was there too and recall him saying that the 35 sounded nothing like the 70.DP 70 said:I remember attending a Jerry Goldsmith lecture at the NFT and they showed the last 10mins of The Wind and the Lion but they only had a
35mm mono print, I heard the 70mm print went to Ireland after the Dominion and the Columbia Theatre and was trashed.
Thanks Adrian, I knew i should have gone to the Dominion.AdrianTurner said:One of my favourites. Mr Milius was very keen to have the music score written by his old pal Mr Poledouris but MGM insisted on playing safe with Mr Goldsmith who wrote one of his best scores for the film. However, a score by Mr Poleduris would also have been pretty terrific in my view - his score for Conan is sort of Wind and the Lion on steroids.
That 70mm Dominion mag show on the curved Todd-AO screen was unforgettable - the movie seemed to arrive from nowhere and within 10 minutes had us all harking back to Lawrence, Kurosawa and the days of high adventure. Can't wait for this Blu-ray.
No question it was stunning there even though by that time the curved Todd AO screen had long since gone. Saw it twice there and loved every minute.DP 70 said:Thanks Adrian, I knew i should have gone to the Dominion.

The ToddAO curved screen was really not very curved! When South Pacific opened in 1958, the curve in the Todd AO process had been reduced to about 5' on a width of about 50'. I have the dimensions here somewhere.DP 70 said:Hi John,
The Todd AO curved screen was taken out in early 1978 and the flat screen with the projection box at the back of the circle opened with The Wiz in 70mm
in April 1978.
I saw the 70mm re-issue of The Sound of Music in Todd AO in middle of 1977 , also i saw a season of 70mm films before they had taken out the curved
screen the last being A Star is Born (1976) which you could only be seated in the stall area.
The cartoon and the Pete Smith specialty will turn up elsewhere if they haven't already. My main disappointment with HIT THE DECK was the omission of the music only track without the vocals. I'm hanging onto my DVD and I placed a reminder note within the BluRay box about the extras that will be found on that DVD.ahollis said:THE WIND AND THE LION looks and sounds very good. At least notches above the DVD release. All of the extras seem to be ported over to the Blu. So time to get rid of that previous DVD (which cousin gets it?).I was very disappointed in HIT THE DECK without the DVD extras included. They was a cartoon and Pete Smith Specialty. The Cartoon might have been caught up with WHV but WAC has indicated they plan to release the Pete Smith shorts so that should have been a no brainier. Oh well!
