Has anyone assembled a list of films released on MOD in the U.S. That have been released overseas as pressed DVDs? Especially if they are better-different transfers.

The recent TCM Archive release of "Midnight Lace" will eventually become a MOD disc, but is available on pressed DVD in several countries as well as a region-free Blu in Australia.

I am amazed that Criterion have not picked this up yet. The Blu Ray is stunning.

The majority of overseas pressed editions of current Warner Archive titles are inferior given that many of the Warner Archive titles are newly remastered rather than simply putting an aged video master on disc. The vast majority of these overseas discs are RKO. MGM and WB pressed retail product are overseas are usually released in tandem with NA (sans WAC titles).

However, some of these pressed WB-owned overseas titles are most certainly identical. For example, The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer is a British production that naturally got a UK release on DVD yet only made it to MOD in NA. The UK disc even has a commentary making it the definitive disc. I'm sure there are other British produced outliers that are on the WAC because they has lesser popularity in NA than they do in the UK. The same thing happened in the Sony and MGM MOD lines, where there films like The Scarlet Blade and The Quatermass Xperiment on MOD whereas they got retail DVD releases in the UK due to their origins as UK productions that have more of a minor cult following overseas

Sony MOD product should have the same expectations as WB--its usually superior or at least identical to any existing overseas product unless there happens to be a blu-ray somewhere out there (don't know of any offhand)

MGM MOD, Universal MOD and Fox MOD is where things get tricky. Many of those (particularly of the Universal MOD) exist overseas on pressed discs because for some reason or another the openly licensed or even personally released discs in overseas nations while not bothering with NA until the MOD discs came along. These MODs are rarely superior to overseas product with the exception of not having PAL speedup. They are often identical to the overseas discs using the same transfers (for better or worse) or sometimes noticeably inferior to the overseas DVDs, with the Fox MOD line being the worst offender in this regard. One overseas Universal title that blows away the MOD is the Australian blu-ray of McHale's Navy (the feature film). Not only is it a stunner, but it's packaged with the sequel, McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force which Universal to this day still hasn't bothered to release in NA in any form.

Of the three, the MGM MOD line surprisingly holds up the best in terms of having the most exclusive library and also holding its own with overseas transfers (almost always identical). There is one major overseas disc that blows away the MGM MOD edition however--that of Rolling Thunder which was released in a stunning blu-ray edition in the UK that MGMs MOD can't hope to measure up to.

There is also a NA MOD of Brighton Rock released by Lionsgate. It is the only exclusively MOD title of its library in NA yet it was released a while ago on pressed retail DVD in the UK. It is either identical or inferior to the UK edition.
