Is there still going to be a standard 3D release? I received an email from Amazon this morning saying my original pre-order was canceled, and recommending the "Everything is Awesome" edition instead. I really don't want the collectible case and toys.

Mark,

Have no idea what the status is on a standard 3D release.

My best guess is yes, but I don't know why it was pulled from Amazon
other than perhaps the studio has not officially announced the title yet.

Suppose we will keep our eyes and ears open for the next few weeks.

Just received an email from Amazon with a $10.00 discount code for the "Everything is Awesome" edition, to help make up for the price difference from my canceled order. Classy (and unasked for) move on Amazon's part.

This would not bode well for a basic 3D release, however. Looks like another studio is looking at new ways to market their 3D releases.

I like the included minifigure, but the molded "bust" (for lack of a better word) looks somewhat lame.

Lame. I want the film in 3D but not blowing $40 for it.
I am with you, Sam.

Is Warner really restricting the 3D sale to this box of junk?

I am trying to give the studio the benefit of doubt on this one.

Could it be like Pacific Rim, where initially a deluxe 3D version was announced, and then the 3D-minus-the-expensive-packaging was announced shortly after? (Apologies if I'm misremembering the title, I think it was Warner's Pacific Rim)

Edit: I have absolutely zero interest in the "box 'o junk" release. However, were a regular 3D version without the extra packaging to be made available day and date, it would be a first day sale for me.

Burbank, CA, April 17, 2014 – Everything will be awesome when “The LEGO® Movie” arrives onto Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD 2-disc Special Edition, and Digital HD on June 17 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures. Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” “21 Jump Street”), “The LEGO Movie” is the hilarious story of a nobody who saves everybody.

The LEGO Movie” stars Chris Pratt as the voice of Emmet, an ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, and Will Ferrell as the voice of President Business, aka Lord Business, an uptight CEO who has a hard time balancing world domination with micro-managing his own life. Voicing the members of Emmet’s rebel crew on this heroic mission are Morgan Freeman (“Oblivion”) as the ancient mystic Vitruvius; Elizabeth Banks (“The Hunger Games”) as tough-as-nails Wyldstyle, who mistakes Emmet for the savior of the world and guides him on his quest; Will Arnett (“The Millers”) as the mysterious BatmanÔ, a LEGO minifigure with whom Wyldstyle shares a history; Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) as the craggy, swaggering pirate Metal Beard, obsessed with revenge on Lord Business; Alison Brie (“Community”) as the sweet and loveable Unikitty and Charlie Day (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) as Benny, the 1980-something Spaceman.

From a story by Dan Hageman, Kevin Hageman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, “The LEGO Movie” was produced by Dan Lin (“Justice League,” “Gangster Squad,”) and Roy Lee (“The Grudge”), with Jill Wilfert, Matthew Ashton, Kathleen Fleming, Allison Abbate, Zareh Nalbandian, Jon Burton, Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Seanne Winslow, Matt Skiena and Bruce Berman serving as executive producers, and John Powers Middleton as co-producer.

SYNOPSIS

So, pretty much confirmed no 3D disc unless you buy the expensive
"Everything is Awesome" Edition.

Not cool at all, Warner!

I was a day one buyer for a standard 3D edition.

Will be passing on the "everything is awesome" edition as well as the 2D-only version.

Warner, you lost a sale by refusing to sell the 3D disc at a reasonable cost without all the superfluous packaging.

And the big box o crap will not sell as well as the standard blu ray. Than the studio will complain that home 3D doesn't sell. They are greedy $&#%.

On the plus side for 3-D sales is that there will be Lego collectors who don't own a 3-D TV or even a Blu-ray player but buy the 3-D just to get the toy. Not that that's any consolation for those that don't want to pay a big price tag for the 3-D version but it will bolster sales a little.

Heh, the way it's worded seems like the 3d movie could even be just a short or something. "Bonus 3D movie" could mean anything.

So the 3D version is now just an extra, not a main driving sales thing?

Yes. Which makes me wonder what Warner's stance on 3D is at this point.

They are not making this an easy purchase for 3D enthusiasts.

Notice the packaging says "bonus 3D movie" and not that it includes "The Lego Movie" in 3D. While I imagine it is the proper BD3D edition -- that's also vaguely worded enough that it could be just a 3D short of something entirely unrelated. Again, I'm sure that's not the case, but terrible copywriting.

The "bonus 3D movie" might be Dream Job: Meet the LEGO Builders, which is the only non-physical difference in the extras listings. It sounds interesting, but I won't be spending that kind of money on it.

I didn't even know there was such a thing - I was being kinda facetious when I said it, but wow, from the vague packaging plus this, it does seem entirely possible that "bonus 3D movie" may not indicate that it's the BD3D edition of "The Lego Movie". You'd figure that would be something they'd advertise clearly, one way or the other.
