So i have been looking into getting an avr and i got to thinking. if i could find a decent one i have an older bose system from mid 2005 or so. could i use the speakers and sub from it with the new avr until i got better speakers? i would probably set up in a 3 speaker plus sub configuration.

Depends if the Bose speakers are Lifestyle (no, you can't) or Acoustimass(yes, you can).Either way. It is a bass module, not a sub.

There is a guy on here selling an Onkyo 708 for a good price. Considering what the latest version costs, it would be a good start.

Onkyo is mass-market...like Denon, Sony, Pioneer and Yamaha. Marantz(Denon), Integra (Onkyo), Anthem, Rotel and Cambridge don't have "cheap" AVR.

You buy your AVR based on features you need and will use....

Have a Wii or VCR?
Get one with HDMI upconversion.

Have an iphone/ipad/ipod?
Get one with Airplay.

Have a roku?
Get one with a roku friendly remote.

Want to run external amps?
Buy one with pre-outs.

Want height or width?
Buy one with height or width.

Want a 2nd zone?
Buy one with a second zone.

Have a turntable?
Buy one with a turntable input.

my biggest concern is longevity and future proofing as much as possible. im hoping the next tv i buy may be oled. or something close to plasma. and something that i can set up a decent home theater on. i like my music pretty loud with some bass to it. so if its like car audio i think the ones with 500 to 700 watts ive been seeing should suffice.

If you want future proof...wait.HDMI 2.0 is coming.Yamaha has the 377. That is the first one.Onkyo already announced the 535/636.Pioneer announced 4.A whole slew of new ones will be out by May.The biggest difference 1.4 to 2.0...ARC/CEC become universal standards.Support for 4k/60fps.

One of the "specs" of HDMI 2.0 is ARC. It is there.

ARC on 1.4 was a foul ball into left field and then strike three on a curveball. Basically it wasn't guaranteed to work if the TV and audio weren't the same brand. Since Yamaha, Denon and Onkyo don't sell TVs...

That, supposedly, changes with 2.0(the jury is still out...I won't be convinced until people start having HDMI 2.0 TV and AVR). ARC goes from an "oh gee, afterthought"...to a CE standard(yes...meaning if a manufacturer includes it...it has to work the same way across brands...something that wasn't the case on 1.4).

The AVR does not power the subs. The subs power themselves. And "technically" the AVR is 90x5. No it really isn't, but...that is a matter for another class(in other words...you don't need to really worry about it...unless you are trying to use really inefficient speakers in an enormous room)

so on the sub where would they plug into avr? i know center goes for the center speaker front would be for the left and right of the center and surround would be two in the rear. if my tv with 1.4 hdmi has arc would the 2.0 arc work with it? or is that something someone will have to try when 2.0 comes out? and i see an option for zone 2? how would speakers hook up for that if all the other connections are taken up by the other speakers? and zone 2 would be for like outdoors correct?

The subwoofer pre-out. All AVR have them. At Onkyo, look at a pic of the back, you'll see two RCA jacks marked...sub

if my tv with 1.4 hdmi has arc would the 2.0 arc work with it?
Maybe.

or is that something someone will have to try when 2.0 comes out?
Maybe

and i see an option for zone 2?
For analog sources only. Look at the pic, again. All those red/white...that is what the Zone 2 uses

how would speakers hook up for that if all the other connections are taken up by the other speakers?
?????? (edit. Just realized you didn't see other speaker jacks, cause there aren't any...answered above...and below)

and zone 2 would be for like outdoors correct?
Or the kitchen...den...bathroom A popular choice for Zone 2 are "wireless patio speakers". Then you carry wherever. The Zone 2 on that AVR requires "the other end" to have the power...hence the self-powered wireless...
