Brad here; Well since schan1269 and Brian McP brought this one up, thought I'd go dig one up I put up on "that other site" before I found this one. Definitely one we'd like on blu.

OK, here's one you might have caught on HBO in the early 1980s (where I first saw it). Called Summer Lovers, this is what I'd call a early 80s "fantasy lovers" flick. From Randall Kleiser (the same fellow who brought us The Blue Lagoon), It features Daryl Hannah in a early pre-Splash role. Also featuing Peter Gallagher as the lucky stiff with not one but two girlfriends (a early "threesomes" deal and French actress Valérie Quennessen (who tragically perished in a 1989 auto accident) as the "third wheel". She's quite the knockout in this film.

Filmways was the original company who brought us this one. Not sure who would have the blu-ray rights. A DVD can be had from Amazon for around $27 for a used one but I won't vouch for the quality of the transfer (having been burned by the DVD for Paradise, the 1982 Phoebe Cates flick). Reviewers on Amazon strongly criticize the DVD quality and for good reasons. The DVD apparently is full-frame and some scenes, most those which gave us wide views of the (nude) beaches in Greece have been cut.

UPDATE: Looks like MGM has the rights. This could possibly be a Twilight Time candidate now that TT is moving to put out more recent catalog titles (i.e. Wild At Heart).

NSFW ALERT on YouTube Excerpt

Film Excerpt on YouTube (I'm So Excited) NSFW ALERT!!

Excerpt:
"Michael and Cathy, a young couple who have just graduated from college, have known each other about 10 years and have been together about half that time. They vacation for the summer on a Greek island. When they visit a nude beach crowded with other young tourists, they are hesitant at first but find themselves getting caught up in the uninhibited energy that surrounds them.

Cathy reads a book of sexual techniques, then ties Michael to the bed and drips candle wax on his chest. She comments that everyone thinks she's "such a Goody Two-Shoes" but she wants a little more adventure.

Michael, who says he has never been with another woman, keeps noticing Lina, a French archaeologist on temporary assignment at the nearby Akrotiri excavation. One day, at the beach without Cathy, he gets his chance to talk to Lina and ends up starting an affair with her. He then feels so guilty that Cathy immediately notices something is wrong, and he admits what he has done, insisting that he still loves Cathy.

Cathy is naturally disturbed by this, but tells him to get it out of his system, which he takes as permission to return to Lina. Cathy then goes to a local bar intending to sleep with another man as a way to get revenge against Michael for cheating on her. But in the end she chickens out after getting picked up by an amorous local boy. When Michael comes home later after seeing Lina again, Cathy says she wants out of the relationship.

Cathy goes to Lina's home to confront her. Lina assures Cathy that she does not intend to take Michael away from her, which seems to calm Cathy somewhat. Lina and Cathy end up spending several hours together getting acquainted, and find themselves fascinated by each other's work—Lina's archeology and Cathy's photography."

For many years this film was thought to have been filmed in Panavision 2.35. The wiki page also states this as well.

However, recently Randall Kleiser on Twitter confirmed that the film was indeed filmed Flat with an AR of 1.85.

I will definitely pick this up if the transfer is decent.

We've had several extended discussions here about this film in the past. I have the original press kit for the film, which included the 1.85 specs. The error on IMDb likely originated from the listing for the film in Leonard Maltin's film & video guide, which erroneously labeled the film a scope title.

Definitely a guilty pleasure. Gorgeous scenery, bodies, and the music wasn't bad, either (But it never included "I'm So Excited" like that clip. It should have been "Young Turks" by Tina Turner)

"I'm So Excited" plays prominently in the film twice (the montage in the above-linked clip and then in the credits). Tina's "Crazy in the Night" and "Johnny and Mary" (a cover of the Robert Palmer original) also appear in the film. As far as I know, Tina never covered Rod Stewart's "Young Turks," but I'd love to be proven wrong on that count. ;)

I was backpacking through Greece when they were filming this. At hostels there were notices asking for extras. I was either too early or too late. A couple years later I saw it while working on a kibbutz.

Don't keep us in suspense Eric. Give us the skinny on how good the HD transfer is, including if Summer Lovers is in the correct AR and how sharp the PQ is.If it's as good as we hope, can a Blu (perhaps from Twilight Time) be far behind?

It looked pretty/very good. I doubt any major work was done on it but it was clean and the colors were fully there-saturated?-especially some of those 1980s outfits. Not as sharp as HD today but it had that film look. There is a LOT of nudity in that movie. Filled the 16x9 screen, no thin letterboxing on top or bottom. Would make a great Blu I'd say.

Just noticed that the thread title misspells the late Valerie QUENNESSEN'S name.

FWIW, the DVD is not missing any information or scenes. The film was shot flat so no nudity was cropped. In fact, the open-matte DVD reveals more nudity at the bottom of the frame than will the HD master, so, if that's of interest to you, you'll want to hang onto your old DVD.

I've only ever seen this on HBO/Cinemax(or whoever else).
Same here so I'm so looking forward to a decent HD release, online or on Blu as this movie must look gorgeous in HD.
I'm still wary about purchasing the DVD as a stand-in until I get a HD version.

You're right to be wary about the DVD, as it is out-of-print and quite pricey so I'd hold off for that reason alone, not to mention it's full-frame and not anamorphically enhanced, i.e. not 16x9.

But, any assertion that the DVD is cropped or cut in any way for content is wrong. As already mentioned, it shows more information than the theatrical prints did or the HD version does.

I watched the DVD back in July as several family members were about to leave for Greece.
I watched this film with mom. ;)

The we watched Shirley Valentine to make it into a great Greece double feature!

I would LOVE a blu-ray of this to put next to my TT Blu-ray of The Blue Lagoon.

When I hear HBO and the early 80s, I think of this flick with 70s Movie of the Week mainstay Glynnis O'Connor.

This movie is on my list in the Top 10 Favourite 70s Movies thread.

I remember seeing this film at the USMC Theater on the 29 Palms Marine Base. Fair to say that all us male Marines loved that surprise eyeful we got of Glynnis O'Connor (whatever happened to her anyway?).
Would love it on Blu.

For the record, I did notice my mistake and wanted to correct it. However only the board admin can alter the thread titles.
Board Admin, if you get a chance and have some time, request you make the correction

Another way to look at Summer Lovers, it would be just about every single red-blooded (straight) male's dream vacation.

And make this two Daryl Hannah movies we want on Blu, this one and her 1984 hit movie Splash.
