Silly question from somebody that should know the answer! (1 Viewer)

I've never been interested in digital playback so I never sort knowledge regarding it. However, I've since changed my mind, but I'm ignorant to the process of using those applications. I want to be to have digital playback (particularly HD) on my Desk Top and iPad. For those that have used Digital/Ultraviolet what is process for using this application. When I see a BD cover with Digital HD and Ultraviolet listed at the top, what does that mean?

Apparently most of us are in the same position ("should know the answer").

I never used it (yet?), but I think I do know that you need to register online for it first. That's where I decided to stop (once, almost a year or more ago). Not against registration, but just didn't fancy the trouble.

Yeah, I just got an email from Amazon regarding the latest Thor film I purchased on BD. The email says I'm entitled to a digital copy of Thor: The Dark World (HD) at no additional cost. Are they my only option to redeem my digital copy or can I instead use Vudu, iTunes and etc?

Amazon, iTunes, and Vudu are independent. A digital copy from one is not compatible with the other.Ultraviolet and Vudu are generally related, your UV digital copy will generally play with Vudu.There are Vudu and Amazon apps for Roku. iTunes is compatible with AppleTV. Amazon and Vudu will play in a web browser on your PC. iTunes will play in the iTunes program. iTunes will play in the video app on the iPad. Many UV will play in the Flixster app on the iPad.

And welcome to my biggest complaint about it. Too many different players you need a scorecard to tell em apart. Josh is probably a better person to answer this, or towergrove. I have helped a family member get UV setup and its still a mess, despite what the fans will tell you. But yeah, Flixster PROBABLY has your movie if you tie it to your Vudu account, but maybe not.

I'm looking at the BD for Thor: The Dark World. I get an email from Amazon that says I'm entitled to a digital HD copy of it. When I look on the back of the BD Box it specifically mentions Digital HD with iTunes. Does this mean I have a choice for the digital HD copy either by using Amazon or iTunes? Furthermore, I can use Vudu instead and how does UV come into play?

Going to the ABSOLUTE bare minimum answers:
When you see a BD cover with DigitalHD and UV, it means you get a free digital movie with your hard disk. (An idea Steve Jobs originally invented, and was initially turned down.) You go to the listed redemption site to enter your paper code, sign up an account with Ultraviolet's site if necessary, and Ultraviolet is the "locker" where you store all your free movies. You can then link into that "locker" through a linked account with Vudu or Flixster, and use those apps to stream/download all your free movies from there. (Or buy them for $10-15 without the disk, but why would you? )

Since Thor 2 is handled by Disney (and Disney doesn't play in UV's sandbox), they have a similar process with different locations: You enter your Rewards code through DigitalCopyPlus--preferably if you've already been entering DisneyMovieRewards codes from your disks--choose to link your movie to iTunes, Vudu or Amazon, and stream/download it through either your choice, or through the DisneyMoviesAnywhere site/app.
And if you link your iTunes account to DMA this month, they'll throw The Incredibles into your "locker" for free. (Hmm, wonder why they chose that promotion?)

Did you get signed up yet, Robert? If not, here is my recomendation. Go to the DigitalCopyPlus.com and redeem with vudu. First create a vudu account, and choose your 5 free HD movies. This will create you an UltraViolet account automatically, if you don't already have one. After you redeem with vudu, then go to the disneymovierewards.com site and create an account. If you redeem there, you will get points, plus the movie will be added to your DisneyMoviesAnywhere account. You link that account to iTunes, and you get the movie there too, plus the Incredibles is a freebie. Also, any DVD's or Blu-rays you have that came with UV codes can be redeemed straight into vudu at the following url:

I know it's a lot, but you will have your Disney/Marvel movies in 3 places, and your UV movies in vudu. You can also do disc to digital, but don't try to do it all at once, it can be overwhelming, as some members have already pointed out.

I already have a Vudu and UltraViolet accounts, but haven't done anything with them except buy "The Train" in 1080p. Just my luck a week after I bought it, TT announces it's releasing it on BD.

Thanks guys, I'll get to work on setting up my stuff completely as I have over 1900 BDs so I know some of those digital codes are still active and haven't expired yet.

What is that? Also, all of these different concepts needed to watch digital material is very confusing. I can only imagine what it is for people that are even more ignorant than I. Also, on my iPad, Pacific Rim can play in HD, but others like Bad Grandpa or Don Jon can't?

Most of the UV and digital codes prior to a year ago are in SD. Most of the newer ones are HD with some exceptions. Hope you have some HD space, my iTunes movies take up over 800 gig. UV take up nothing because they are in the cloud. Its a pain during setup because you have to go through all your cases take out the slips, make sure they aren't expired and start downloading.

I used Flixster early on for my UV. All titles I entered there appear in my Vudu account as well.

Doh! But thanks, I'm sure you prompted it and now a Blu-ray will be available to the rest if us. I missed that announcement by the way. Do you have a link handy? Was it announce here?

Because Wal-Mart owns Vudu, they want you to buy as many titles as possible. And since you have DVD's/BD's that probably came out before digital-copy codes, they may let you enter your existing disk and pay a $2-$5 surcharge for the digital, but, again....why??

Not different concepts, just a lot of different brands all trying to sell the same thing.
Get right down to it, all you need is:A) a place to redeem your codes and/or buy your movies
B) an account to keep the movies, and
C) an app to that account to watch the movies.

UV and DMA are the place, and iTunes, Amazon and Vudu are the accounts and apps that do all the hard work.

i have received these in the past, but just deleted them.

i must be missing something ?

what is the advantage to having some digital copy of it somewhere when i can put the disk in my own system anytime i want ?

Because the early ones were in SD is why I never had any interest in digital copies until now. Let me fully explain what I am saying about certain titles only playing in SD. On my TV displays utilizing Vudu through my Roku units they play in HD. However, when I play them on my iPad or PC, they will only play in SD whether I go through Flixster or Vudu. These are also newer titles like Bad Grandpa, Don Jon, All is Lost and Blue Jasmine. However, Pacific Rim for example will play in HD on my iPad and PC. I wonder why?

It's coming in June. I'm still buying it the BD disc anyway as it's one of my 100 all-time favorite films.

The good news today is I accumulated over 3000 points over at Disney today and have exceeded my title limit for one day.

Okay, I've done about 60 movies. Using Vudu, I noticed the best audio you can get is DD+. Is it the same with iTunes?

Nope. Just plain old Dolby Digital with iTunes or Amazon Instant Video.
