After seeing the magnificent job done in converting THE WIZARD OF OZ into 3D,I would love to see 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY in the same format. That would be mind ..blowing

Somebody actually suggested (I think in a thread on this forum) using 3D to recreate the "curve" of the screen in HOW THE WEST WAS WON. That would be an interesting use of 3D conversion if it could work.

Forget the 3D (although it would be cool). I would just like to have a properly mastered, 4K scan Blu-ray release of 2001!!! What we have right now is far from stellar, no pun intended.

Dream on folks, it'll never happen.....

Somehow I don't think the Stanley Kubrick estate would dare let any tinkering around of any of his movies without his says so (and he's out of town at the moment, currently he's between Jupiter and Io)

Sad to say also, compared to all the other 3D product that one can access, a coverted "2001" would probably be pretty underwhelming, compared to something like "Gravity" -- if I was ever going to put "2001" back in theatres, it would be as an IMAX presentation, it would be up to MGM and the Kubrick folks as to whether or not in 3D.

Why would the Kubrick Estate have any say? And it's Warner Bros who own the film, not MGM.

There were some lenticular 3D posters that are quite valuable today. If only there had been Viewmaster reels!

A 50th anniversary theatrical reissue would be nice though.

RAH forgot to include the silent Dolby Atmos mix that would enhance any space movie (2001, Gravity, Star Wars...you name it).

This probably would look stunning in 3D. But the whole process probably would be quite expensive if they want to do it "right".

No way would his estate agree to this. I would love to see it in IMAX, though. I would also welcome a smilebox version on blu-ray. It was only single screen Cinerama, but I think it would be an interesting bonus disc to an anniversary edition.

3-D would definitely be interesting. I'm anxiously waiting for the day when WB announces a new special edition Blu Ray containing (only as a supplement) the 17-19 minutes of footage removed after the film's premiere, which was discovered within a Kansas salt mine vault a few years back and proclaimed to be in pristine condition.

"How about we all just say no to 3D conversions."Why? The magic word is "quality". If those 3D conversions are in good quality then I would love to see more. Nobody wants bad or mediocre 3D conversions.

Mediocre like the decidedly mediocre 2D Blu-ray we have of 2001 now? If a 3D conversion would get this film a proper **2D** Blu-ray release then I'm all for it. Otherwise, no.

Based on known audio errors on "Wizard of Oz" not getting corrected on the original version when it got it's 3D conversion, I wouldn't expect any additional work to be done to 2001 if it got it's own dumb 3D conversion.

I have this recurring dream that Criterion gets their hands on the rights, does a complete restoration, and produces a 5 disc Blu-ray release of 2001 based on an 8K scan (with a future 4K release in mind), chock-full of every piece of extra and archival material in existence. Almost forgot - someone invents a time machine, goes back to 1969, and gets Kubrick to record a commentary too...

Then I wake up.
