It's good that they're going to include the original mono soundtrack, as those particular mono mixes are different to the ones used on the LP, and unique to the film.

If this is to be a limited edition, as one of the above links is saying, then I doubt this will be a Criterion release...

I doubt it will be labeled a Limited Edition. To some people's terminology any release with bonus content is a "Limited Edition". Sent from my VS920 4G using Tapatalk

Here is something interesting I would like to share. I asked around, and found out that when the film was first released 50 years ago, it began with a B&W United Artists Hexagon. Wouldn't you love to see that restored on the latest version of the film?

Here's proof that Ron Furmanek's mono mix for the new blu-ray edition of A Hard Day's Night was rejected by Criterion.

Trust me, it WILL be a butchered mono mix. Nowhere near as close to the original one as possible, the one Ron had in mind.

Actually, the forum post referenced is not "proof".

A poster named Vidiot states:
"I am told by Ron that he does not believe that his mono mix will be on the Criterion Blu-ray."

Nowhere in that statement does it mention any rejection, or even direct confirmation of what actually will be on the disc.

As for it being 'butchered', that is speculation, without any supporting facts.

.

The poster named Vidiot is Marc Wielage, a well-known film-to-video transfer technician responsible for the blu-ray editions of "Dances With Wolves" and former writer for The Perfect Vision...

What am I missing here?  Why would anyone need a new mono mix - what is wrong with the film's original and quite wonderful mono mix?

It's not a new mono mix. After the butchering of the track on early re-issues, Ron restored the original 1964 mono mix which hadn't been heard in years.

I hope it's on the Criterion disc, and I hope there's a chance of the mono "Help!" surfacing at some point, too.

When Ron did the mono restoration for Walter Shenson, the original 35mm optical and magnetic mono elements were missing. His restoration was taken from a pristine 1964 composite 35mm optical print found in the UK.

They were missing because Universal Pictures, being the "geniuses" that they are, threw them away when they re-released the film in 1981. There are television airings in the 70's with the original mono soundtrack, though.
