The King of Comedy, The 30th Anniversary
Academy Award® Winner Robert De Niro*, Jerry Lewis and Sandra Bernhard give mesmerizing performances in this “chilling black comedy” (TV Guide’s Movie Guide) that explores the painfully high and often hilarious price of fame. Desperate to be a star, struggling stand-up comedian Rupert Pupkin (De Niro) enlists the aid of his fanatical friend Masha (Bernhard) to kidnap talk show host Jerry Langford (Lewis). The ransom? A guest spot for Pupkin. The results? Outrageous! The King of Comedy stands as Scorsese’s prophetic masterpiece which confronts a celebrity culture that “looks more disturbingly current with each passing year” (Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide).

*Actor, Raging Bull, 1980; Supporting Actor, The Godfather Part II, 1974.

At last, At last!

The cover art is questionable.  Would rather have original poster art, but

one can't expect these kind of things anymore.

Wonder if we'll be getting a Wolf of Wall Street announcement soon too for roughly the same time frame? Methinks it would make sense for Paramount to package the launches close together.

Finally.  Strange how this one was announced weeks after Norma Rae despite its earlier release date.

Strange as it seems, this looks like the first Jerry Lewis film on blu-ray after all these years (save the cameo in IAMMMMW)

Olive release a handful of Jerry's films a couple of years ago: The Geisha Boy, Rock a Bye Baby, It's Only Money, and Who's Minding the Store.

Man, how did that slip my mind??  I should know since I own them.  Thanks for the obvious correction there.

I'm often surprised by how many movies I forget that I own. It's bad when shopping and seeing a good price on something and having to visualize my shelves to see if I already own it. I think I need an iPhone catalog app :)

I maintain an Excel listing of my collection, which I back up to Google Drive so it's accessible on my Android. A cruder method, perhaps, but positively indispensible.

(Actually, not crude for my own purposes, as it's a nicely honed listing containing exactly the info I want -- no more and no less. But no one would call it sexy.)

Wow, I was really looking forward to this release and retiring the DVD.  One of my favorite films.

The blu-ray looks quite strange to me (not referring to the sequences shot on video).  Greenish palor, desaturated skintones.  I paused  about 20-30 minutes into the film to ensure my projector's bulb wasn't going bad or a different color setting was mysteriously selected.  Nope.

I'm sure it was intentional, but I don't like it.  Oh well.

Felix,

Me...one of the film's biggest advocates, actually forgot to preorder this Blu-ray.

I just ordered it through Fox's FLASH sale last Thursday.  It will take a few days

to get to me.

Meanwhile, PR change at Fox caused our reviewer to be sent a delayed copy.

We should have a review up in a few days.

Reviews I have read elsewhere suggest the image is soft, but well detailed.  No

mention of color problems.

There are probably members who have already watched their copy that can chime

in on this release.

All I can tell you, for the moment, is that I am pissed I forgot to preorder this and don't

have it in front of me to look at.

I wouldn't say it's a problem; more a choice.

The blu-ray has a darker, less saturated image than the DVD, some crushed shadow detail.  This I don't necessarily object to.  Also - definite resolution improvements, as expected in HD.

But...something seems off, IMHO with a push toward cool/green in some scenes.  This I don't like, but it's surely intentional.

I am probably overly sensitive to this as I am working on a project where one of the cameras I'm working with has a similar green push, and I am having to color correct this footage to match other footage.
