Here's a thread to officially say good-bye to a Blu-ray or DVD you are trading in or letting go of for the last time. You can just list the title (film or TV) you're dropping, or leave a quick reason or review.

If you're like me, you have more BDs or DVDs on your shelf than you'll ever get around to seeing again. You collected them over the years like old friends, and maybe screened many for real friends and family. You probably thought you created a library to pass on to your children but, let's face it, they will never have the exact same interests as you and they don't want to have to get rid of all your stuff when you're gone (I remember donating my Dad's VHS collection to Goodwill). So, what do you do?
One by one, or some by some, you officially let go of them here. Honor them for the viewing service they provided, then send them off on their way. Maybe they weren't special enough or didn't hold up under further scrutiny to remain in your collection, or maybe your shelf just couldn't hold any more and you needed to weed stuff out, but here's a moment to acknowledge those casualties and... let go.

First up for me...

"Tequila Sunrise"I actually just picked this up on as a recent BD release because I wanted to see it again in HD and didn't remember it all that well (it was the 80s and I was probably doing some of the stuff they were doing in this film). But it was written and directed by Robert Towne and had Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer. Plus, I thought it would have some memorable L.A. locations.
Man, what were they thinking? The dialogue is fine, the faces are gorgeous, the Conrad Hall cinematography is beautiful, but it is deadly dull, showcases nothing but interiors and a little of Redondo Beach, and it's like a ponderous attempt to do a modern "Casablanca" love triangle. It's just not a good film. And it won't be staying on my shelf. The space it saves will go to the upcoming BD of "Double Indemnity," a far superior noir."Tequila Sunrise," thanks for the pretty pictures, but, for me, it's sunset time.Bye bye.

I gave a DVD of The Night Porter to my niece, who is at IU studying at the Kinsey Institute.

I had already bought the BD of TNP, but the reason for TNP for the story here...

I was on a 2nd, very promising, date. She and I(a woman I had known since high school) had decided we would find a mutually beneficial movie that neither of us had seen. Both were into noir...great start.

Anyway, I happened to live close to a very good book/DVD/VHS store...so off we went. After about 30 minutes of "seen it"...we stumble across TNP. Somehow I had not seen it. So...off it went with us.

This is the same woman I am with now...our third stretch though(she's in the military and leaves...for long stretches). Fond memories of that particular DVD for both of us...how many people buy something together on a 2nd date...that doesn't involve food or a ticket to something?

Anyway...you'd think my niece is my GFs niece.(My niece has unfiltered thoughts on numerous subjects...got her into some hot water with "the staff" in high school).

TNP fits in with her field of study.

I'm also saying adios to Tequila Sunrise. I've had more fun counting the tiles on my living room floor. I thought there was something wrong with me when I blind bought this and started watching it last weekend. Almost an hour into it and I kept hoping it would get better but it didn't. There it sits, on my junk pile.

Any DVD or Blu Rays taking up needed space might well be considered for donation to your local library. Both the library and film fans would be grateful.
Our state library system is crammed full of folks who had to blind-buy Blu 3D disks and found they didn't like them, or who said "I had to buy Cars 2 for the extras and they only came in the stupid 3D edition!", and donated all their old 3D disks to the state. And on behalf of us early adopters, we thank you for the plentiful free checkout rentals, whoever you are. :)

And I can't be the only one reading the header and thinking:

The Blu glows bright on the player tonight,
Not a fingerprint to be seen
A week of isolation,
Since I last put on "The Queen"
Netflix is calling, like this swirling storm insideCouldn’t put it in, heaven knows I triedDon’t give in, don’t let them seeBe the optical fan you always have to beLaser-beam, never stream, don’t let them knowWell, now they know
Let it go, let it goCan’t hold it back from now onLet it go, let it goSell it back to AmazonI don’t careWhat they’re going to sayLet the streams rage on,Ultraviolet never bothered me anyway

(Although I confess I had to cheat and look up the original lyrics on the web; I didn't know them by heart because y'see...I'm male.)

I hoard "stuff". I can't help it. It's a character weakness. I only give DVDs away if I've upgraded to BRD.

At present I'm holding in store for a friend I won't be seeing for several weeks these DVDs where I've now gone Blue:

Rope
Rear Window
The Best Years Of Our Lives
The Driver
Rebel Without A Cause.

Within the next few weeks I'll be giving away DVDs of Khartoum and The Blue Max

I'm sure I've got some junk in my DVD collection, but the only DVDs I've said goodbye to have gone to relatives if I purchased the Blu-ray. There have been quite a few.

Love the poem. And yeah, I've donated to libraries, but the ideal situation as some mention here is to find someone - a friend or family member - who will appreciate your discard. I've done this with many of the DVDs, I've upgraded to Blu-ray, including all the DVDs replaced by the BDs in the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection, Best Years of Our Lives, From Here to Eternity (both keepers) and a few hundred more).

But this thread was more about the ones you're letting go for the last time in the "life's too short" category for priority re-viewing.

Here's today's offering...

"F Troop" Favorites Collection

Better left as the memory of a 10 year-old who reveled in it.

Bye bye.

I'm probably going to incur the wrath of a few horror fans here, but the Stephen King wing of my collection has been gradually shutting down (except for The Shining which stays with Kubrick, and is timeless. Ditto for Christine and Carpenter).

I've certainly enjoyed many King adaptations over the years (the last one I watched was Needful Things), and have owned at least a dozen or so on DVD and Blu-ray. However, in recent years, I've come to realize that his works seem to have a limited shelf life...they can be great fun on first viewing, with a few of them (like Carrie, The Stand, and The Mist) worth a second look...but most of this author's adaptations seem to be fully digestible and filling on that first sup...

...which makes them perfectly fine movies, no criticism intended, just nothing I care to re-consume months or years later.

Right. My only Blu-ray keepers for King adaptations are The Shining, Stand By Me, Carrie (De Palma version), and The Shawshank Redemption. Everything else, for me, is One and Done. And wow, let's not even talk about Under the Dumb. Dean Norris saying "What the Hell" every five minutes has nearly erased 5 years of magnificence as Hank on Breaking Bad. (Course, you can't blame him for the scripts or for taking the pay day).

Yes, I was amazed how "F Troop" played better seeing it as a small kid -- still, that cast, those guest stars -- how could you give away anything with all them in it? I still give the show a run at my place occasionally -- no more than two episodes at a time.....another show in that same league, the recent "My Mother The Car" -- pretty good, but in small doses only.

Giving away dvds, like everyone else, those I have multiple copies -- the original "Godzilla", multiple copies of assorted Ed Wood movies, "The Wizard of Oz" (a friend of mine gave his dvd copy to a little girl who lived next door, probably around 6 years old - her best friend, same age, was with her, saw him give her the dvd, and immediately began beating her up on the spot, trying to get the disc for herself. Victor Fleming would have been proud)

On the way out (eventually) 2 sets of 20+ James Bond pictures on dvd, assorted hits of the 70s (Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Jaws etc), "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (thanks RAH!), Three Stooges features (the new set of 6 features out very soon), multiple special editions of classics (Casablanca, Singin in the Rain etc), -- I'm trying to stop myself from buying the same movies over and over again -- I've got to the point when I've given away bluray versions of movies -- Enter the Dragon is one that comes to mind.

My one hope is that 15 years from now, blurays won't be going through 'laser rot' the way laserdiscs did (and I have hundreds of those -- you can't even give those away now) -- yet somehow, most of those vhs tapes keep rolling along, after 20 years....who'd have thought?

For my money, the worst film of a King novel is Dreamcatcher. Directed by Lawrence Kasdan from a screenplay by Kasdan and William Goldman, with Morgan Freeman, Thomas Jane and Tom Sizemore in the cast, you end up with a film that is both ludicrous and repulsive. Roger Ebert had it right: "a monster movie of stunning awfulness. How could (Kasdan and Goldman) be responsible for a film that goes so awesomely wrong?"

"Medium Cool" Criterion Blu-ray

As a historical document of the student protests and police crackdown around the Democratic National Convention in 1968, and shot documentary style by master cinematographer Haskell Wexler, it can't be missed. As a story, it's a mess.

You only need to see it once.

Bye bye.

I'll be giving my copy of The Lion King 3D to my sister-in-law for the nieces and nephews. I watched it the other day - and it looks great - and I just don't see myself ever watching the film again. I was never *that* into it when it first came out, and while it's a good movie it has never pulled me in like so many others seem to get pulled in.
I'm also gonna sell off my DVD set of Homicide: Life on the Street Complete Series. Great show, but one I won't be rewatching (I've become much more selective on what TV I keep on hand since streaming TV is so prevalent and the shelf space is so large). Fortunately I picked up the set fairly inexpensively a couple years ago and definitely got my money's worth from it.

There's a few DVDs I plan on watching in the next couple months that will determine whether I care to still keep them. Still, all of this is a drop in the bucket of the 1000+ discs I now have.

Also, to me, there are certain film/show types that I have in my collection:

1) Films/shows I love and have to have available at a moments notice to watch: I'd say 75-80% of my collection falls under this category, and 99% of my TV content for sure.

2) Films/shows I like but would probably not keep if it didn't have certain excellent bonus content: Some Criterions I own fall into this category.

3) Films I don't care for at all but are part of a box set: Happens most often with larger collections (Hitchcock box, Bond, Alien, Star Trek, etc.)

4) Films/shows I like, though normally not enough to own, but I'm pushed to own due to difficulty of future accessibility: Owning all of the MST3K releases falls within this category even though several episodes I won't likely re-visit. I also buy the Cinerama releases for this reason even though how much I like each film varies (and #2 also applies for those). As another example, if it wasn't for the 3D history I probably wouldn't keep Man in the Dark.

If it doesn't fall within those categories I just don't see the point in owning it anymore. I used to have a fifth reason - "Personal Film Library Completest" - but I've since realized that collecting for this reason is too costly and shelf-space consuming when compared to the actual benefit if I'm not going to actually watch the disc for any of the other four reasons.

I'm totally with you on all those categories 1-4) plus, guiltily, 5) Films that featured spectacular nudity by actresses I 'admired' along the way. Hey, I don't do pornography or strip clubs, so we have to grab our voyeuristic treats somehow. And on that note....

"Species"

To be perfectly honest, it was only on the shelf for Natasha Hendridge's breasts. But I just saw Alexandra Daddario on HBO's True Detective.

Bye bye.

I'm not counting DVDs I let go of to be replaced by BDs (I do that monthly, as well), but BDs or DVDs I'm letting go of for the last time. And I did the same thing you did on Spartacus... kept the first season, and dumped the following three seasons. You really only need one season of that show because the battles and slow-mo-mouth-agape-leap-through-the-air-with-a-broadsword-beheading-someone gets a bit redundant. But it also qualifies for shelf-space reason #5 (see above).
