Maybe I should have called this the 4K iMac in 2014 Anticipation Thread. According to Macrumors, Dell is launching a $699 28" 4K display. In the Mac Pro thread I had mentioned that the iMac line was now powerful enough to do the things I need my computer to do, and I no longer needed a Mac Pro (though I want one, but alas finances speak more strongly than desire).

I didn't pull the trigger on a 2013 iMac because of a lack of Thunderbolt 2 (which is on the 2013 Mac Pro and the Macbook Pro) and the possibility of a 4K screen. While I knew TB2 was coming to the iMac in the next iteration, I was much less certain about 4K since at the time of that post, 4K monitors were costing as much or more than the entire iMac. Now with a $699 offering from Dell (and one assumes Dell is making money off of that price) it seems the pricing barrier for putting a 4K display on an iMac has been broken.

If so, 2014 will definitely be the year of the 4K iMac purchase for me!

30hz refresh is a bummer if you do fast past games.

I would be first in line to buy a 27" 4k iMac. Sorry Dave!

You'll probably get your wish. This is replacing an early 2009 24" C2D iMac, that I bought unwittingly just before the big refresh to the Core i5 line.

So no doubt Apple will dramatically overhaul the iMac months after I bought a high-end model :)

Memo to self: prepare to buy the next rev of Apple products after Dave has purchased his model.

Sam I fully agree on 30hz sucking for games. If Apple were to do 4K this year for iMac, I don't think they'd use that panel (assume Dell sells it at $699 so just the panel cost would be half or less of that). I think Apple would require at least 60hz for their iMac display. And with Apple's buying power, they'd be able to secure a pretty decent price I'd bet for that panel, which should allow them to put it into an iMac, I'm hoping this year.

My question concerning 4K is whether the existing 2013 rMBP/MacPro HDMI 1.4 ports (4K at 30Hz) will be software/firmware upgradable to HDMI 2.0 (4K at 60Hz) and/or if you will be able to go Thunderbolt 2.0 to HDMI 2.0.

Hold on tightly, let go lightly.

Now there's really no excuse.

http://www.macrumors...-28-inch-ud590/

Couple that with all the rumors about the new 4K resolution support in OSX 10.9.3 beta...come on Apple make 4K happen with the iMac in 2014!

Sincerely,

Someone who can't wait to give you $2.5K...

I still don't have a good feeling for 4K at WWDC, but keep hope alive, at least for a price cut maybe?

I hear ya Sam. WWDC seems to now squarely be focused on iOS8 and OSX 10.10 (and maybe Beats acquisition if Dre hadn't blabbed about being the first billionaire rapper). I'm still hopeful for a 2014 release, as Apple has been known to update their machines now outside of the WWDC window. I think Intel's delayed Broadwell release date has screwed with Apple's timetable (and also could be an explanation as to why they're rumored to be exploring using their own manufactured ARM chips in future laptops). I don't know if they'll wait until Broadwell to refresh, or do a speed bump upgrade like they did with the Macbook Air. After getting my first iPad (an Air), I've realized I won't buy another Mac device that doesn't have retina-display type DPI, whether it be an iMac or a Macbook Pro/Air.

I thought WWDC might be kind of a sleeper this year, as it doesn't seem like we will see the watch or TV, but with the rumors of home automation integration and the new air platform I am kinda intrigued.  Looking at DaringFireball Gruber has said twice now he is SUPER excited for this one, so we'll see.

The one prediction I have is that this will be time for Cook to really shine or sink, putting his spin on things without as much of a Jobs ghost as the past two.

Wish we could cross-reference posts, because I'd have liked to put this in both this thread and the iPad Air discussion with Ron, but apparently Eddie Cue was quoted as saying that later this year they have the best product pipeline he's seen in his 25 years of working at Apple. Time to start saving the pennies...

We have 2 x DELL 4K monitors (both P2815Q) Connected to (same setup) Late 2012 Mac Mini running 10.9.3 connected via Mini DP to DisplayPort. All cables, keyboard and mice.everything is exactly the same...

BOTH monitors....were working fine...but we bought these new Mini DP to Mini DP cables. We replaced one and then we saw that the picture was flicking in some areas with some black box areas..especially during login.

We didn't like it so we put the old Mini DP to DP back....The same thing happened. We tried swapping it out on the other duplicate station..got the same problem.

While the resolution looks fine in the parts of the screen that we see........and we have even done a check on other resolution settings to see if we get different results...No..we deleted other system preferences and rebooted several times.....we still get these blocked areas on the screen.

So here is what we did to troubleshoot.
We tried several troubleshooting experiments to rule out software, cables and Apple's hardware first.
We put back the original existing cable. We still got the same results from the images above.
We tried other cables. (for example...HDMI to VGA)
We reset the Dell to Factory Settings.

  We reinstalled Mavericks
We booted up Mac in SAFE MODE (Which rules out a lot of software and extensions or application conflicts and issues)

We even connected the mac to a SAMSUNG monitor which resolution and no blocks appeared on the screen. It was fine.

We ran a DELL Monitor hardward "bad pixel" test by pressing buttons 1 & 4 for 2 seconds and running through the colors. Looks fine.

So now we are back to the original cable and factory settings which we did not have a problem with...with the above problem.

Dell has said they will replace the monitors...but if these monitors are easily damaged by pulling out a cable and putting a new one in....big problem.
