Sony BluRay DVD not working with Onkyo TX-NR626 (1 Viewer)

I'm sure this is a user error type of issue, but I've tried everything I can think of and it's still not working. I can't get my Sony BDP-S5100 BluRay 3D DVD player to work through my Onkyo TX-NR626 receiver. I have it plugged in to the BD/DVD HDMI port, but on the TV side (Visio M-Series) the picture flashes but is mostly just black. It doesn't stay visible long enough to even access the DVD set up menu. The audio cuts in and out but is mostly out.

I used the 10 second "stop button" method to reset the DVD player to the lowest output resolution. This helped a little, but it still wasn't working. I plugged it in to all the other HDMI ports on the receiver and none of them worked either.

I have an Xfinity X1 cable box connected through the cable HDMI port of the receiver and it's working great and is broadcasting in 1080P. No problems with the cable at all. It's just the DVD player.

I've hooked the DVD player up directly to my TV and it works great. I used the same HDMI cable for this, so it's not the cable itself. It has to be a tuner setting of some sort.

Can someone help me with the receiver setting that I need to make this DVD player work?

My guess is you didn't unplug the AVR from the wall before you did this.

Many AVR will not allow you to connect HDCP devices "hot". You have to do it when the AVR is unplugged from the wall...

That is in your owners manual.

Thanks for the suggestion. It wasn't the solution, however. Through the process of troubleshooting, I had tried a full reboot of the receiver. I did it again to be sure, but it didn't solve the issue.

I did find a solution via the Onkyo support desk, however. They said it might be an issue with something called Deep Color. I managed to lower the Deep Color output on the DVD player from 16bit to 10bit. That solved the problem. 16bit and 12bit didn't work, however 10bit or turning it off all together worked.

Not sure why though...

I just got a Sony BDP-S5100 3D Blu-Ray player and it would not work through my Onkyo TX-SR606 (it would not communicate well with the Onkyo and would not show the Sony boot up screen and menu on the TV). I have a directv DVR and Sony Blu-ray connecting into the Onkyo 606 via HDMI and HDMI out going to the TV. My old Visio Blu-ray player worked fine throught the Onkyo. Hooking the Sony S5100 direct to the TV worked fine as well proving it was the Onkyo with the problem.

The Onkyo would not recognize the BD player signal except only when I would play a movie or let it stay connected for several minutes.

Turning "HDMI Deep Color Output" to OFF on the Sony solved the problem. (you have to have the BD player hooked direct to the TV to see the menu to fix this) Reconnecting the HDMI back through the receiver, the Onkyo picks up the signal from the BD player fine now. Apparently, it didn't like the HDMI deep color setting.

From the Sony manual:

[HDMI Deep Color Output]
[Auto]: Normally select this.
[16bit]/[12bit]/[10bit]: Outputs 16bit/
12bit/10bit video signals when the
connected TV is compatible with Deep
Color.
[Off]: Select this when the picture is
unstable or colors appear unnatural.


Also, I got a SAMSUNG UN60F7100AFXZA 3D TV at the same time as the Sony and I had sound and video sync issues from video from the Directv DVR and the Blu-ray player (from playing a blu-ray and also streaming netflix vids). I set the Onkyo A/V Sync setting to 80ms which seems to be the best setting to address the "lip sync" issue. (finding a PGA golf show in HD and syncing the crack of a driver to the ball impact helps) I know a slight delay is common but I also wonder if the processor in the Samsung 7100 series just isn't up to the task as my 10 year old Mitsubishi 52" DLP never had an audio/video sync issue.

I am passing on this info about the deep color setting because I found this tip here and somewhere else out there on the Internet.

The lip sync is because of the LCD.

DLP, CRT nor plasma has this problem.
