I saw this last week; it's a great piece. S:TM is still the standard by which I judge a comic book movie, and it's still the best one, if you ask me. Hard to believe it has been 35 years. I was there opening weekend. I can't say I feel this year's Superman movie did the series justice. It wasn't a bad film (like III and IV), but I preferred the chronology of Superman Returns to the reboot.

Superman was my favorite film as a youngster. I think I saw it like fifteen times during its original and subsequent rereleases. Still love it to this day. Can't believe it's been 35 years. Just like Superman, time flies. ;)

I remember S:TM being the movie that broke the $4 barrier for a movie ticket at that time, but the tagline was "You'll believe a man can fly", so I guess that justified the price hike then. :D

It was the first time I recall that superheroes were presented with a straight face. The origin story in this one is classic Americana. Without S:TM, I don't see there being films like Batman (1989), X-Men, Spider-Man and so on. Richard Donner deserves more credit than he gets for crafting the modern superhero movie.

Recently, I showed my kids (age 5) Superman: The Movie. They loved it and quickly wanted more. I thought of showing them Donner's II, but decided on Lester's II (so as not to show them the same ending). They loved it. I decided to skip III and IV for now, and show them Returns, which is a more direct connection to I and II. They loved it, and so did I. I have long been a supporter of Returns, and only now, having watched the films in this order, do I see that Returns was conceived and executed as the third part of a trilogy. It's a shame this isn't the movie Christopher Reeve got to make circa 1986. Bryan Singer's movie holds on to the more serious tone of the original film, and gets rid of all that campy stuff. But many of the moments between Superman and Lois are emotionally resonant; Singer also makes Metropolis a place and a character in the movie -- the city has a real relationship with Superman.

I'll show my kids III and IV at some point, but I'm glad they saw the films this way. For me, the Superman Trilogy will always be: Superman: The Movie, Superman II and Superman Returns. (I won't be showing them Man of Steel for a good number of years. Too grim.)

I prefer original Dolby Stereo with some subtle dialogue pans if you have Superhearing as the DVD and bluray same dreadful re-mix the re-packet won't do truth and justice in the Dolby Stereo way. :P

What a shame the original nagra tapes for the sound and foley effects tracks of this film have rotted away.

Well why can't they use the other prints to listen too and if any papers notes written about the sound work at the time any pictures of behind scenes of the sound mix can be studied and re-created with a new Foley mix to match as close to laserdisc :P when they have it close they should then go beyond to getting indistinguishably unnoticeable and transparent, and if it can fool me, then they have succeeded.

What happened to Superdog? I recall reading in some of the DC comics I once had and they got misplaced in moving in the early 80's.

I had to look to see if a Supercat existed. I want that outfit for my cat. :P Edit. Brought one off ebay for my cat.

I was lucky to see this in 70mm Dolby Stereo one sunday morning at the Odeon Leicester Square before release the print then went back to the USA and we only had 35mm Dolby Stereo prints for the release in the UK.

I remember the sound was fab and that bass was the best I have ever heard at the Odeon.
