“An exotic love story becomes an empowering portrait of two highly gifted women who defy social convention... thanks to saucy, full-bodied performances by leads Gloria Pires and Miranda Otto.”

“Piries is a vibrant and charismatic force of nature, and is perfect as the frank and down-to-earth Lota, while Miranda Otto’s shy elegance nicely fits with complex characteristics of Elizabeth Bishop.”

~ Mark Adams, SCREEN DAILY

A Bruno Barreto Film

Debuts Digitally February 4th and on DVD February 11th

Bonus Materials Include a Behind-the-Scenes Featurette

SAN JOSE, CALIF. (December 9, 2013) — Anchored by critically-acclaimed lead performances from Miranda Otto (War of the WorldsLord of the Rings: The Two TowersLord of the Rings: The Return of the King) and Glória Pires (Smoke Gets in Your EyesIf I Were You), Director Bruno Barreto’s (Dona Flor and Her Two HusbandsView from the Top) romantic period drama REACHING FOR THE MOON will be available across all digital platforms beginning February 4th, before debuting on DVD February 11th from Wolfe Video.

An intimate snapshot of the search for inspiration, wherever and however you find it, the film is based on the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop (Otto), who travels to Brazil where she encounters the beguiling architect Lota de Macedo Soares (Pires). Initial hostilities make way for a complicated yet long-lasting love affair that dramatically alters Bishop’s relationship to the world around her. Based on the bestselling Brazilian novel “Rare and Commonplace Flowers” by Carmen Oliveira, the film evokes the vibrant life in Rio during the 1950s. Bonus materials include a “making-of” featurette that takes viewers behind-the-scenes of the making of the film.

Before its theatrical release in November, REACHING FOR THE MOON garnered numerous awards on the film festival circuit, including Audience Awards for Best Feature at the 2013 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival, Frameline37 - San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, the 2013 Toronto Inside Out Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival, and the 2013 Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.   In addition, the film was an official selection at 2013 Tribeca Film Festival and 2013 Berlin International Film Festival.

A sophisticated tale of an unlikely romance between two extraordinary artists, set against the backdrop of political upheaval and a clash of cultures. Grappling with writer’s block, legendary American poet Elizabeth Bishop (Miranda Otto) travels from New York City to Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s to visit her college friend, Mary (Tracy Middendorf). Hoping to find inspiration on Mary’s sprawling estate, Elizabeth winds up with much more - a tempestuous relationship with Mary’s bohemian partner, architect Lota de Macedo Soares (Glória Pires), that rocks the staid writer to her foundation. Alcoholism, geographical distance and a military coup come between the lovers, but their intimate connection spans decades and forever impacts the life and work of these two extraordinary artists. The film also co-stars Treat Williams as poet Robert Lowell.

REACHING FOR THE MOON has a runtime of 118 minutes and is not rated.
