Just ran across this on the German version of Amazon:

http://www.amazon.de/Kampfstern-Galactia-komplette-Blu-rays-Amazon/dp/B00GUI0IDK/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1386257357&sr=8-17&keywords=battlestar+galactica+blu+ray

A English soundtrack is included.

Anyone have any inside insight on this release? Remastered or just slapped onto a Blu-ray format as is?

I see grabs from Galactica 1980 used, mistake..or is the sequel series included also?

Is a U.S. release not far behind?

Thought the many Galactica fans here would be interested in this.

This would be great if this is what I think it is.

I'll wait for a region A release. (70 euros is somewhat over my price range).

But if it's just a upscale from an SD source, then I'll pass.

I'd be extremely wary of this kind of release. This is not Universal, it's a local German company who has previously released DVDs of the BSG movie cuts. I have a feeling this is just an uprez of the existing DVDs.

BSG movie cuts?

Are you talking about the telemovies: Curse of The Cylons, Space Prison, etc. or movie cuts meaning Mission Galactica and Conquest of The Earth?

Thanks!

It's being released by Koch Media who has a reputation for excellent Blu-Ray transfers. The set has also been confirmed to include all 10 episode of BG:80 also in HD.Also, Universal probably re-mastered the entire series when they did the theatrical cut of the pilot earlier this year.

Yes, we are talking about the 1978 series, NOT the newer series.

thanks tom,

i have seen the name in writing, but know nothing about it.

i did purchase this amazon sale, so i guess i got the newer one.

is their a connection between the old series and the new series ?

or a better question is - would i be doing myself a disservice by watching this series first, before i watch the 1978 series, which i do not yet own ?

There is no connection, none between what many like myself refer to as "Galatica In Name Only" (GINO) and the original and true "Battlestar Galactcia."

It remains a sore subject for many like me a decade later.

If they did remaster all the episodes in HD (including Galactica: 1980) I hope they restored the correct series title to episodes 4-10 of G: '80. On DVD and syndication, they re-titled all those episodes as Battlestar: Galactica.

Just got this set in the mail today. I took a quick look and can confirm the following:

It's region B locked

These are indeed true HD transfers. From what I saw, they look excellent!

Audio is DTS-MA 5.1, I cannot tell about the quality as I was using my TV speakers.

Galactica 1980 is indeed here, also in true HD. The title remains Battlestar Galactica though.

There are new extras including Con footage and the Super 8mm digests (in SD) of the three BG titles that were released. Audio for the Super 8mm films is German but still nice to see these!

I won't get to watching this in full untill after the holidays but it all looks great!

Now, bring on Buck Rogers! :)

I wonder if all the original special features (including deleted scenes) are also present on the new set (and whether they're still SD or in HD), or if they have been expanded upon (or left out entirely)?

Is there any mention in the credits about who did the HD transfers of the series? Universal?

Could the studio be readying a blu-ray for release in the US? If so, why wouldn't they do so in conjunction with the repackaged series in February?

I'm speculating that Universal has made new HD transfers of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, much like CBS DVD does with many of their shows, and is slowly rolling them out even in SD. I've noticed that the transfers used on Amazon Instant Video and Netflix are the same exact transfers that they used on the 2003 DVD set, however VUDU is selling the show on SD that features what appear to be slightly different transfers, sharper and clearer and with brighter colors (it's on sale right now for only $5, actually). In fact, VUDU's SD transfers appear to be higher quality to me than the so-called "Super HD" transfers being used on Netflix currently, which I think are just simple upconverts of the old transfers. VUDU features 2 minute free previews of each episode--anyone interested can check a few out and hopefully see the differences I'm talking about (particularly in the show's main title sequence).

I think that between the Germany release and the new VUDU transfers, this all bodes well for an eventual U.S. blu-ray release, which is something Richard Hatch also confirmed for me when I talked with him at WonderCon last spring.

If that's true, and blu-rays of the original show are coming, Universal really ought to say so before the release of the repackaged series in February. I was planning to get the repackage for the single-sided discs, but will wait for blu-ray if it is coming.

As I said, I won't get into the set in full untill after the holidays. From what I can tell though, all previous extras are here, probably all in SD as the few I checked are.

New extras include Con panels with the original cast and the German Super 8mm digests.

All extras have forced German subtitles except for the German Super 8 films which are German dubbed.

My guess is that Universal did the HD transfers at the same time they did the feature version of the pilot.

Looking at Koch Media's website shows they distribute many Universal titles so they probably had no problem creating an exclusive deal.

Why is this odd? There have been plenty of US titles that have had HD foriegn releases before coming to the US. It's actually not that rare, or unusual.

Koch has a distributation deal with Universal. They asked for the BG exclusive. Universal gave it to them.

Well, any Blu release will have to wait untill the Koch Media exclusive is over. That could be anytime from a couple of months to a full year.

My guess would be that you'll see a US release sooner rather than later, possibly early summer. Just a guess.
