IN A WORLD…

Available Jan. 21 on Blu-ray & DVD

CULVER CITY, CALIF. (Nov. 18, 2013) – Lake Bell writes, directs and stars in the Sundance Award-winning comedy IN A WORLD…, debuting Jan. 21 on Blu-ray and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film, which Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers called “an exhilarating comic rush,” follows Carol (Bell), a struggling vocal coach who, shortly after getting her first big break in the cutthroat world of movie-trailer voiceovers, finds herself in direct competition with her father (Fred Melamed), the industry’s reigning king, as well as his arrogant protégé (Ken Marino). The comedic cast also includes Demetri Martin (TV’s “Important Things with Demetri Martin”), Rob Corddry (Warm Bodies), Michaela Watkins (TV’s “Enlightened”), Nick Offerman (TV’s “Parks and Recreation”), Alexandra Holden (The Hot Chick) and Tig Notaro (TV’s “The Sarah Silverman Program”), with special apperances by Eva Longoria (TV’s “Desperate Housewives”), Geena Davis (Beetlejuice) and Jeff Garlin (TV’s “The Goldbergs”).

The IN A WORLD… Blu-ray and DVD feature commentary with writer/director/actor Bell, who explores the father-daughter competition story through lessons on how to rise from weakness, accept achievement and receive love.  Also included are deleted scenes, a gag reel and six voiceover promo trailers for the film.

Synopsis:

In this hilarious and idiosyncratic comedy, Carol (Bell) is an underachieving voice coach living in the shadow of her egotistical father Sam (Melamed), the undisputed king of the voice-over industry.  When Sam kicks her out, Carol lands her first voice-over job with the help of charming sound engineer Louis (Martin).  As romantic sparks begin to fly, Carol finds herself facing a momentous decision when continued job offers put her in head to head competition with her dad.

Written and Directed by Bell, IN A WORLD… was produced by Eddie Vaisman, Mark Roberts, Lake Bell and Jett Steiger. Executive producers are Ross Jacobson and Sean King O’Grady.

Blu-ray & DVD Bonus Features Include:

§  Gag Reel

§  Deleted Scenes

§  Commentary with writer/director/actor Lake Bell

§  In A World… promo trailers

IN A WORLD…  has a run time of about 93 minutes and is rated R for language including some sexual references.

How, oh how I came to loathe the Don Lafontaine-style voiceovers on trailers, with the deep, breathy, voice and all the verbal schtick. Trailers go through phases. After Lafontaine passed away, that style of voiceover pretty much vanished, and I was grateful (not for his death, as he was apparently a real decent guy) that I wouldn't have to hear that sort of narration on 4 of every 5 trailers anymore. Now we have a cascading series of quick (almost subliminal) fade-in's and fade-outs which I am currently finding every bit as irritating.

In a world where movie Trailer Guy voiceovers have still existed since the late 90's...

(And, y'know, I actually kinda feel guilty for liking the old 1989 Batman trailer that first pioneered the extinction of voiceover narration, and just letting dialogue bites tell the whole story.)
