This is just for the helluvit.

Rules:

1. List 25 titles you believe Criterion will release next year - no more, no fewer. Titles already announced as of 11/15/13 (for release in January and February) are not eligible. Therefore, the list you post is for the 10-month period of 03/14 - 12/14.

2. One post per member only, so think your choices through before posting. No late additions, no edits.

3. No posting after 12/31/2013.

4. No member who has insider information from Criterion is eligible. This has to be the honor system. The rest of us need only use common sense regarding what we assume Criterion has the potential rights to release, and which titles they would likely have an interest in. Those of us who have collected Criterion titles for many years will be able to make reasonable guesses about what titles they might shortly upgrade and which new titles they might add. .

5. One year from now, the person who has the most correct guesses wins. (Wins what? Just the satisfaction, of course!)

My own speculation follows (in no particular order, and heavily biased toward classic titles).

Have a blast!

1. SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE (upgrade)
2. SPARTACUS (upgrade)
3. THE PARALLAX VIEW
4. SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS (upgrade)
5. THE KID (CHAPLIN), possibly with THE CIRCUS
6. THE VIRGIN SPRING (upgrade)
7. UTEGSU (upgrade)
8. DON'T LOOK NOW
9. THE OFFICIAL STORY
10. OLIVER TWIST (DAVID LEAN) along with GREAT EXPECTATIONS, SUMMERTIME & HOBSON'S CHOICE. (upgrades)
11. JU DOU
12. KNIFE IN THE WATER
13. THE FAR COUNTRY (AND MAYBE OTHER UNIVERSAL ANTHONY MANN WESTERNS)
14. IKIRU (upgrade)
15. THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING (upgrade)
16. THIEVES LIKE US
17. ACE IN THE HOLE (upgrade)
18. RED RIVER
19. BICYCLE THIEVES (upgrade)
20. FORBIDDEN GAMES (upgrade)
21. CRIA CUERVOS
22. THE EMIGRANTS / THE NEW LAND (I know, these are Warner Bros properties... but I can dream, can't I?)
23. THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER
24. FIRES ON THE PLAIN
25. BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK

Well, that's my list, and I have to stick to it now. Who wants to challenge me?

Bad Day at Black Rock is also an MGM film that's a Warner property. I sure would love to have a Blu-ray of it!

I'll add Women in Love and The Music Lovers to your list.

Parralax View deserves the best treatment. It's simply the best paranoid thriller ever made. I would also love to see Devil and Daniel Webster.

You mention "The Kid" and "The Circus", but I think the next Chaplin we'll see is "Limelight". They always go sound/silent, and the last one was a silent. :)

My short list will be:

1. Limelight
2. Red River
3. Scanners
4. The Kid
5. The Freshman (Harold Lloyd, wouldn't it be great if "The Sins of Harold Diddlebock" was paired with it?)
6. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (upgrade)

You're not paranoid if they really are out to get you.

I would love to see Spartacus get a new transfer and Criterion release, i have low hopes though.

No fair - you broke your own rules by editing your post :P

Anyway, here goes:

1. The Element of Crime (upgrade)
2. The Brood (Rumored)
3. Scanners (Rumored)
4. The Good, the Bad & the Ugly (Wishlist but rumored)
5. Picnic At Hanging Rock (Upgrade)
6. Europa (Upgrade)
7. David Cronenberg's Rabid (Rumored)
8. Spartacus
9. The Earthling (wishlist title based on solely on MGM's penchant for doling out stuff)
10. Robocop. News of a forthcoming 4K upgrade could mean Citerion is releasing it (and based on the fact that only the 1st film has been announced so far). Hopefully.
11. On the Beach (1959)
12. Panic In Year Zero (wishlist)
13. Silence of the Lambs. Criterion has worked with Demme before plus MGM is on a licensing binge so it's possible.

I can't honestly think of anything else. Am I breaking a rule if I don't list 25?

These I hope for in blu-ray: SPARTACUS, KING OF KINGS (upgrade), SIGN OF THE CROSS, SATYRICON, ROMA and NIGHTS OF CABIRIA.
These pretty likely due to foreign release: RED RIVER, TESS, SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS, SUMMERTIME and LIMELIGHT.

Great titles, Matthew. I haven't seen Limite, The Great Beauty, and A Bright Summer Day because they haven't come my way. All the others would be definite buys for me, including a double dip for Drive.

Man, what I would give for this! IMHO, it would also make a good Twilight Time candidate but they don't have a deal with Paramount.
