I read that if this show goes a second season it will have an entirely new cast (at least the main players).

I really liked the premiere. Strong showing by all parties involved--really nothing negative I can say.

Well done. Dark and brooding. It moves methodically though, so I think this may be one I DVR and watch in bunches at a time.

Harrelson and McConaughey are excellent. Although I must say, this isn't any darker than Hannibal, and that's on network TV. Which is more about how unbelievable Hannibal is on network TV than any inadequacy in True Detective.

It might get darker than just this first episode.

I thought the premiere episode was excellent. It did a great job of creating a foreboding atmosphere and established a richly textured environment. In that sense it kind of reminded me of the feeling generated by David Fincher's Zodiac - which is a compliment. It felt densely packed and was very efficient in its use of time. I particularly liked the conversations between Marty and Rust while traveling in their car - especially Rust's explanation of his philosophy. I liked that the series setup a number of story threads in the first hour and I am really looking forward to where this is headed. Pretty terrific first hour.

- Walter.

Very well done all around, although I'm not sure about Woody Harrelson's half-cocked Larry Flint voice that seems to drop in and out. A little distracting and unnecessary, but other than that it was great.

Was it just me or did others think in the very beginning the McConaughey character was in prison?

I think until he said he was drinking again, I assumed he was locked up too.
I thought the caption showed they were interviewing him at CID. Looks more like he's a janitor or something now. Clearly, his life outlook and abilities to identify psychos has not worked out well for him.

Really enjoying the mood of this show.
Me, too. Everything is so controlled and precise. All the performances--including the minor roles--have been stellar. Great use of music, moody lighting, et cetera.

With two out of eight episodes aired, True Detective is in the running for my favourite new show since Mad Men started.

Rust works in a bar 4 days a week and drinks when he's not working. The show is simply excellent. The depth of character found through action and dialog is like nothing I've ever seen.

Marty's mistress -- DEAR GOD.
