I would like to own this series. It is available on the Warner Archive Streaming service so there is a strong chance they will release this on DVD in the future. I would also like to get the WWII show Garrisons Gorillas on DVD but WA doesn't own this one and I'm not sure who has the rights so not much hope for that one right now.

GARRISON"S GORILLAS is probably with ABC/Disney/Buena Vista like Combat!, and syndicated by Paramount. I wonder if it would do any good to email some of these digital sub-channel networks Antenna, ThisTV, Cozi etc to request it.

I did write to Me-TV about it. I suggested that they should use a few hours each day to show lost or one season shows. I have a friend who'd like to see it tooJames

Warner Archive has just posted a video on Facebook showing a MOD release schedule...Jericho is shown with no release date affixed, but must be soon...the same sheet shows Daktari season 4 as coming too...

GG was being looked into but the word I heard is that for ABC/Disney to dig through the files and pull out 45+ year paperwork makes it cost prohibitive. Fortunately, we have the off-airs from Good Life's run in the 90s anyway.

Good news about Jericho coming from the Warner Archive, in June.

If ABC/Disney ever do get to GARRISON'S GORILLAS I hope they include the alternate pilot with Rick Jason and the COMBAT! cast. (If you look quick in the GG aired pilot you can see Jason and Pierre Jalbert, (Caje), in the opening action scene. Another SELMUR war pilot could be added as another extra. That one starred Gary Conway and was set in the WWII Pacific Theater. It was shown in the Combat! time slot one week, and was called OPERATION: ATTACK.

Garrison's Gorillas is up on youtube, but some episodes are not complete depending on the uploader.

What about Convoy? The seriews only lasted 13 episodes onm NBC in the 1965-66 season, when it had the dubious honor of being the last B/W show on the network. I vaguely remember seeing an episode or two and being saddened when it was cancelled.

From Wikipedia:

The series starred John Gavin as Commander Dan Talbot of the US Navy destroyer escort "DD181" and John Larch as civilian merchant Captain Ben Foster of the cargo ship "Flagship", who were involved with the convoy ships and their escorts that help to transport food, supplies and war materials across theAtlantic during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Convoy is owned by Universal, but sadly, you'll never see it with only 13 episodes produced, so forget about a DVD collection unless they have a set of 16mm prints they could supply to TMG/Shout! for remastering.

Not that good of a show. Kind of ponderous from the few that I've seen. Although there was one really good episode with Jack Palance, Barbara Rush, Jeannine Riley (the hottest of the Billie Jo's on Petticoat Junction) and Dennis Hopper, playing a nutjob of course.

Actually, if you want to talk about short-run WWII dramas, the best of the bunch is Blue Light. Never saw it at the time but FoxNet ran it and its a really good show. Unfortunately its owned by Fox so you know what that means.

I've never seen an actual episode of Blue Light...I have the Fox dvd feature film I Deal in Danger...which I understand was edited together from the series for foreign theatrical distribution...I'd love to see the series get a proper release.

Is Jericho any good?...I've never seen it...the scenario is obviously derived from the actual Jedburgh OSS/SAS/FFI sabotage and recon teams inserted just in advance of the Normandy invasion...I wouldn't demand too much historical accuracy, but hope that if it was filmed at MGM that it might have, at least, comparable production values that were a strength in Combat...

Combat! , in my opinion, is the absolute best of the surprisingly few WW2 shows...and one of the greatest tv shows ever...12 O'clock High is pretty good too, especially the first season Robert Lansing episodes, although neither, thankfully, were short run series and were successful...

I have only seen four episodes of JERICHO. I'd say the MGM production values are very high. The MGM sets are populated with a lot of extras and props. It has a nice Jerry Goldsmith theme song. It is not a heavy melodrama but more a light adventure and it does have some odd comedy elements, (see episode one with Tom Bosley). I thought Don Francks was very good as the leader. Jericho also starred John Leyton and Marino Mase.

Jericho was produced by Arena Productions on CBS for the 1966-67 season, but was cancelled after only 16 episodes. Arena was also producing both MAN and GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E., that season too for NBC. So that MGM lot was very busy. COMBAT!, on ABC, had to move off the MGM lot to CBS facilities for some season five episodes.

Thanks Bob for the info...I didn't Know that Jericho has a Jerry Goldsmith theme...I'd almost get it just for that alone...and knowing that it was filmed at MGM with their then great studio facilities and resulting production values is a plus...Don Francks is a Canadian actor that I'm very familiar with...

I've always found it somewhat surprising that there were so few TV series set in WW2...relatively speaking, and recognizing that the western was king...

I have read that U.N.C.L.E. and Combat! productions were often at odds with each other on the MGM lot at that time...friction between Sam Rolfe and Richard Caffey...George Fenady was quoted as saying that MGM doubled the sound stage rentals to run Combat off the lot...who could blame them for favouring the show they owned on such a busy lot that was only getting smaller with real estate redevelopment...I remember reading a funny story from Jack Hogan about him running (in his uniform carrying his B.A.R.) into a horse's ass on a western set just off the French Village site they were filming on...

I think I'll get Jericho when WAC releases it...my expectations are not held too high...just hoping it's at least as good as some of the more ordinairy Combat episodes...

I just remembered that THE RAT PATROL had come back from Spain and filmed the back 13 or so of the first season, (and the 2nd season too), at MGM also at that time. Busy place MGM. And, of course, we see the MGM lot actually torn down as part of the action of the TV-Movie, THE PHANTOM OF HOLLYWOOD, which was produced and directed by COMBAT!'s Gene Levitt. Phantom was released by WAC awhile ago.

There is a CD of Goldsmith's JERICHO score sold at Filmscoremonthly.com. You can listen to sample tracks on the site.

We had that DIRTY DOZEN revival in the eighties, with three TV movies, (available on DVD), and the short-lived weekly TV-series with I am not sure how many episodes, starring Ben Murphy and one of my favorite character actors, Frank Marth. I thought there was something missing in these DIRTY DOZEN shows but at least they looked good, being filmed in Europe with uniforms, weapons, and vehicles that looked very accurate.

Speaking of the RAT PATROL. There was an attempt to revive it, ( in the eighties, I think). I remember seeing a still with Robert Forster in the Sgt. Troy outfit standing in front of a jeep, in the local paper's TV column, when the new version was being shopped at a syndicator's convention. I don't know if a pilot was actually filmed. I imagine it would have worked like AIRWOLF Season-4, with new scenes with the new cast interspersed with the big action scenes lifted from the original series.

Thanks Bob, for more great and interesting info...you're really stirring up the dark recesses of my memory...

I do remember those dirty dozen telefilms, but not the short lived series...of course I'm a fan of Lee Marvin, looking forward to Kino's blu of Prime Cut...

I'll check out those sample tracks for Goldsmith's Jericho music...thank you for that...part of the reason I have Twilight Time's blu of The Blue Max is for his extraordinairy score, among many other tv shows and feature films...sometimes, the music is by far the best thing about a show...

In this genre, and in tv in particular, I consider Combat! to be the best, even when limited budgets forced proceedings into making WW2 look like a low intensity conflict...my only realistic complaint about that show was in their being only limited use of distant gunfire sound effects...Normandy was such an intense battle in a relatively small battlespace, and too often the show was too quiet, ha, ha...if you know what I mean, even though our Mom's were quite upset at the noise of gunfire on this show...it certainly had some of the best hand to hand fighting stunts ever seen during that era..."9 Place Vendee" comes to mind...

I'd also completely forgotten about that aspect of Phantom of Hollywood...that's another one for my long list at WAC...

What kind of automatic rifle is John Leyton holding on the DVD cover?
