You're Next...The Greatest Horror Film Ever Made (1 Viewer)

My title of this being the greatest horror film is obviously a joke but YOU'RE NEXT is yet the latest horror movie to be talked up as if it's a masterpiece but it turned out to be incredibly bland. As a die-hard horror fan I will admit that this has been a pretty good year for the genre but I think the reason this film kicked around the festival market for two years is because my fellow horror buffs like to talk up films that others haven't seen because they want to feel as if they're witness to something "special."

The story here is pretty straight-forward as a family gathers in a huge house in the deep woods when some masked killers show up. Obviously this film borrows from THE STRANGES but we also get the "rock" soundtrack that Dario Argento was using in the 80s and there's even a touch of HALLOWEEN and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD thrown in. I will admit that the nod to DEATH WISH 3 made me laugh but I'm not sure how many others in the crowd knew about this film.

There are countless logical issues with this film. Had one single person here been smart then the movie would have been over before a single person was killed. I'm also rather confused on what type of horror film they were trying to make. It seems that parts are trying to scare you and stay away from the gore/violence. Then there are other scenes that are just thrown together for the violence. Very uneven from start to finish. The direction made for two great jump sequences but the majority of it was just bad. The constantly slow-motion scenes were embarrassing and laughable at times. There wasn't any scares and the gore scenes were pretty forgettable.

The lead actress was great though and as I said there was two great jump scenes.

Still, all the "buzz" building up for this film just makes me shake my head. I really don't see it here.

I really dug it but I hadn't really heard that much about it and I'm also a sucker for home invasion movies. Some of the stuff is pretty convenient simply so the movie doesn't end but my only real gripe with the movie is at the very end

I just saw this yesterday and I really enjoyed it as well. It's not fair to call it horror, it's more of a horror/black comedy. Some bits were over the top because they were supposed to be and much of it needed to be taken tounge-in-cheek.

At work today it seemed the few people that had seen it also enjoyed it but man did this one leave me cold from start to finish. If it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek then this here was just way too uneven throughout the picture mixed with everything else that was going on. I'm glad others are enjoying it but man I really thought I was being nice to the thing before I started reading other opinions on it.

It's being talked up by those at the age for whom no expression of emotional sentiment can be expressed without the E-word.
(Ie., those for whom "Ever", in terms of experience, would be back to '97 or so. )

And thought "Home invasion" was So Over by now--to join "Torture porn", "Yuppie from hell" and "Mommy/daddy trophy-child horror" in the ranks of expired zeitgeist horror gold-rushes that just happened to push a few buttons at the time with one indie hit.
But no, after "The Purge", now we're getting the "ARTSY home invasion" genre! It's not just lame vicarious sadism, it's now art, making some wickedly allegorical point about society and the social class system! Call it the "Straw Dogs with pedigrees" genre.
(Or, it could be just fanboys getting themselves into a lather about any movie they read about on the fan sites while still in production/festivals.)

And phew, don't scare us like that with the header--Had the "Val Lewton would like to have a word with you" response about the Pubescent E-word.

It felt so disconnected, with too much scripting randomness to sustain much tension. Nothing really works, and even if it was a satire, it fails to entertain.

I give it 1.75 stars, or a grade of C-.
