I've been holding off on buying the individual seasons (with the exception of 1 and 2) hoping that they would be released as a complete collection. It will be this October. I wish they had repackaged the sets so it's not so bulky.

It should also be noted that this collection doesn't include the 4 telefilm collection that was released a year or two ago.

(By the way, wouldn't it be great to see Lansbury reprise the role of Jessica Fletcher one last time in a final TV movie?)

Andrew,

I don't mind the packaging since we have a lot of room in our library. However (and this would be the deal breaker for me), do you happen to know if these DVDs are single-sided or double-sided discs?

Good question, Scott. I seem to recall that the first season was released as flippers, but after that Universal began releasing them single-sided. I'm currently an ocean away from my collection, or else I'd take a look for you. Does anyone else know?

The first 3 seasons were double-sided discs.

Going by Amazon disc counts, the complete series box is 63 discs, the original sets were 54 discs total.

So, do the math. The 3 disc flipper sets become 6 disc single sided sets, and that accounts for the other nine discs to make the complete set 63 discs.

/that's assuming the Amazon listings are accurate on disc counts, of course.

Edit: Or, we could have just all read the TSoD article that explicitly states the set will be 63 single sided discs...

The article mentions that Magnum Complete will be released at the same time. I stopped buying the Magnum sets when I started getting freezes and pixelation. It has been so many years that I remember that Universal sets were buggy like that (I stopped buying their sets, even though they had a lot of content I liked) but I don't remember why. Because they were double-sided? Because they were dual layered? That's mainly rhetorical, as my real question is, are the single sided releases like this and presumably Magnum free from those problems? I've been waiting for a Magnum Complete, but I won't take a chance if they are still susceptible.

Assuming these are fine, I wish they would release a Quantum Leap complete with the music from most of the Euro releases. ;)

Greg,I am going to wait until someone buys this complete set and then I will read their review of it. The last thing I would want would be for the complete set to be released, and find out (regardlless of what the press release says) that the first couple of seasons are still on those dreaded double-sided discs. ;)

Going by every Universal complete series rerelease I can remember, they all get new pressings where the double sided discs are changed to single sided discs.

Columbo, Law and Order, The Munsters, A-Team, even Shout's rerelease of Leave it to Beaver. All had the dreaded flippers converted to single sided discs.

So, the problem was when they were flippers? If so, I guess solidly finding out they're single-sided would be a green light to buy.

According to TVShowsOnDVD.com they are now all single-sided.

I never cared for this show, even though I adore Angela Lansbury. But I might just have to pick this up.

EDIT: Or I could have just read The Obsolete Man's post above more carefully! LOL

Greg,Yes, at least for me that was the problem. I didn't have any pixilating, but I did have numerous freezings as I progressed further into the series (mostly season two and season three). This looks like a buy for me. :)

Sounds like the perfect opportunity for those who purchased Seasons 1-3 as flippers to ditch their sets and go for the complete set. Good to see Universal correcting their errors, in regards to those problematic flipper discs. They re-issued the complete "Ma and Pa Kettle" film series on regular single-sided discs after initially releasing them in 2 collections on flipper discs.

^And as soon as you subscribe (or add it to your queue) they'll drop it because it's "classic" thus making it rarely viewed and/or not "original programming". Other than their "original programming" I wouldn't trust *anything* to be on Netflix beyond a few days.

I've been holding out on this one because of all the reported problems with those early seasons. I'll probably spring for the series set. Now if they'd go back and fix S1 of The Rockford Files I'd be a happy camper!

i am watching this currently with the twilight zone.

i had never seen it before.

it is somewhat entertaining.

although i do find it a bit silly that the cops, etc. ask a mystery writer to solve the murder for them.

i am only towards the end of season 1.

It's a light, entertaining mystery series not meant to be anything but passing entertainment. It certainly holds no deep insights into the human condition, but then, it never professed to be that.

In many cases, Jessica supersedes the police investigation because she has insights they lack. Sometimes her interference is welcomed; at other times, it's resented. But she always is the one to triumph at the end, so don't expect that formula to ever change over the course of its twelve seasons and four TV-movies.

I have seen every episode countless times, first during their original broadcasts and reruns and then as the show moved to syndication and then was released in season box sets.

The early seasons are the best with more puzzling mysteries and solutions; later seasons run to easy formulas and stock characters. But the show always played fair: the incriminating clue is always in plain sight if you're observant enough to spot or hear it.
