A very good film that I'll definitely buy on BD.
That's what I am hearing. My brother saw it recently and told me
that it's a cross between Amityville Horror and The Exorcist.
I'll buy this blindly.

Saw it the other night, and it is indeed a "conjuring" of Amityville and The Exorcist. And it's VERY well done. There were several points at which I thought they had the chance to "sail right out there" with some horrible excess or very direct imitation of those movies... and they didn't. Really enjoyed it.

I am hearing nothing but raves about this film.

Everyone is saying this is going to be a horror classic in the likes
of Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, etc.

I have to confess I never considered AMITYVILLE HORROR to be anything close to "classic" quality. It has a few creepy moments, and a few non-horror situations that were fairly compelling (such as James Brolin trying to find the money with which he was going to pay his caterer). The split-second appearance of glowing eyes outside a child's bedroom window was the best moment for me. Otherwise, Rod Steiger is painfully over-the-top, and most of the last half-hour feels forced and unbelievable. On the other hand, THE CONJURING was for me a completely compelling story. Other reviewers have mentioned this, but the hide-and-clap game is so beautifully used as a scare device that I hope other so-called "horror film directors" will take a lesson from it: you don't have to have shock music cues or things flying into the frame to scare the crap out of an audience. I just liked the characters, the space they were given to be regular people you could identity with, and the intelligence with which the story was built.

I am the biggest Amityville fan there is (of the movie and the real-life events) and I thought this was 100 times scarier than that film (except for the actual house....nothing can take the place of the Amityville house for me.) The kids in the film nailed the 1970s look and acting. Vera Farmiga deserves nominations for her work here. This will go down as a horror classic, and I'm glad to say I was in the audience when it was first released.

Would love to see this based on the reviews, but I can't stand the thought of paying money that in any way supports the Warrens (or at least Lorraine now). But I'll probably cave. It's been too long since a well-crafted horror story came along.

Her sister, Taissa, was great in American Horror Story. Even in the role of an (very) annoying teenager she made you ultimately care about her; no mean feat.

Managed to finally see this film yesterday.

It literally drains the life out of you. I felt exhausted
by film's end.

Truly, one of the best crafted horror films I have seen.
If you don't plan on seeing this theatrically, I would urge
a blind Blu-ray purchase.

I'm glad you enjoyed Ron. Yesterday, I almost went to see it again, but there was too much time to kill before the next showing so I decided to do something else instead.

Hasn't been officially announced, Glen. I would think it will be out
the end of October or November.

Thanks, Ron.

I'm tempted to see it in a theater, but I've had bad luck with horror films in theaters due to rude audiences laughing and heckling. When I saw THE EXORCIST first run I was 15 and the audience sat there in stunned silence, which only increased the fright potential, something I love. Since that particular movie I've noticed audiences have become much more willing to disrupt the scare factor by trying to maintain a level of faux superiority. So I think I will wait for THE CONJURING to come out on Blu and watch it late at night alone or with like minded friends.
