kaline was my favorite player when i was a kid.  they had some really good players, but their pitching was not strong enough. 


however, mickey lolich was a tremendous pitcher.  i am not sure i would have traded him for any other pitcher.  beating gibson in the seventh game (something that mclain had absolutely no chance to do) demonstrated just how good he was.
