I have a PS3 connected to a Edson 500 silver edition projector with a hdmi cable. I do I connect audio through a a/v receiver. what a/v receiver would you recommend

Will the hdmi from the PS3 into the receiver and then to the projector carry audio

Yep, HDMI has always carried audio. That is why it replaced DVI.
