I expect we will eventually get JULES AND JIM from Criterion. DAY FOR NIGHT is coming out in Blu -- but only in the U.K.

But, where's the love for this legendary filmmaker? Where are all the films MGM once released on rather mediocre, non-anamorphic DVD's, such as THE STORY OF ADELE H, THE WILD CHILD, THE BRIDE WORE BLACK, SMALL CHANGE, etc? C'mon, somebody -- this is great stuff!!

Where are TWO ENGLISH GIRLS? CONFIDENTIALLY YOURS?

This fine artist is seriously underrepresented on Blu-ray!

Jules and Jim, the Antoine Doinel films, Shoot the Piano Player, Confidentially Yours, The Soft Skin, Two English Girls, and The Woman Next Door are all with Criterion. They've already released The Last Metro and The 400 Blows on Blu-ray, of course.

The Bride Wore Black, The Green Room (The Vanishing Fiancee), The Man Who Loved Women, Mississippi Mermaid, Small Change, The Story of Adele H., and The Wild Child are all with MGM.

Day for Night is with Warner.

Fahrenheit 451 is with Universal.

Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me (Une belle fille comme moi) is with Sony.

Thanks so much for detailing who has what. I have been surprised at Criterion's slow roll-out of his pictures that they control. I've been expecting Jules and Jim since they began issuing Blu-rays.

There has been talk that Criterion will re-release "The Soft Skin" soon and i do agree that Criterion has been slow with releasing more Truffaut on blu-ray. How about Werner Herzog?....to my knowlege none of his early films are on blu-ray!!

I'll have to search out all the Truffaut titles ... especially the Doinel cycle -- and will aim at getting Day for NIght as soon as it appears in the UK.
Meantime, my favourite Truffaut of all, Vivement Dimanche (known in the States as Confidentially Yours) had a great DVD release in France of much higher quality than the Region 1 version, so I'm hoping for a Blu ray from there.

Actually, at last check, only THE GREEN ROOM is still with MGM; the other Truffauts MGM previously released have reverted back to the French producers, possibly MK2. Jacob Perlin's tiny reissue label The Film Desk has been handling them for theatrical play. So far there haven't been any new DVD releases on them, but Film Desk also did a reissue of MONSIEUR VERDOUX, which has since come out through Criterion, so perhaps they are working on getting this package.

Count me in as an admirer and collector of this fine French director. His films are characterized by charm and grace and a humane spirit. I agree with the thread starter that Francois Truffaut is shamefully under-represented. The old MGM transfers on DVD weren't very good in the first place. New scans are needed. I would especially like to have THE STORY OF ADELE H (1975) and THE MAN WHO LOVED WOMEN (1977) in hi-def, but I will buy every Truffaut film that finds its on way onto blu-ray.

While I wouldn't go as far as to call it my favorite Truffaut film, Confidentially Yours is very underrated.

Just saw "The Bride Wore Black" the other night. I know Bernard Herrman wrote the score, but who composed and what is the classical piece that Ms. Moreau plays on her 45 rpm record at every murder scene? I know I have this recording, but I cannot find it. I think it is mandolin, and I think it is maybe Mozart or Vivaldi. Any help much appreciated.

I believe I have found the recording I was looking for. In addition to the Bernard Herrman score for "The Bride Wore Black", Jeanne Moreau plays a 45 rpm record at the site of each murder. I believe that recording is Vivaldi's Concerto in C, RV425 for mandolin, strings and continuo, the Allegro. Also used in the film is Mendelssohn's Wedding March from "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

The same Vivaldi piece, Concerto in C, RV425 is also used various times in Truffaut's "The Wild Child".

So far as I know only THE 400 BLOWS is on blu-ray from Criterion. It was originally part of their The Adventures of Antoine Doinel box-set. That was in 2009. Everybody thought the rest of the films in the set would soon follow, but nope. Perhaps they will consider upgrading the other Antoine Doinel films to blu-ray. For a director who was immensely popular and much admired in the 1960s and 1970s it is inexplicable how he has dropped out of view.

I'd love to Eric Rohmer's films on blu-ray, too.

Criterion's THE ADVENTURES OF ANTOINE DOINEL set (and their THE 400 BLOW Blu-ray) were recently discontinued, but they still have the rights to the movies. So I'm thinking with the move to dual-format, this may be a sign that the DOINEL set will be re-issued in the near future as a dual-format release.

There is a massive French box set of Eric Rohmer's films in the works: http://www.potemkine.fr/Potemkine-movies/Eric-rohmer-l-integrale-box-set-coffret-eric-rohmer-l-integrale/pa61m3f210.html
The Rohmer set is for me. Is there any indication in that French write-up if the discs will be English friendly? I was raised on English subtitles in the cinema, but French discs rarely have them.

There are a couple of blurays of Jules and Jim listed on bluray.com - one is Spanish (from 2011) and one French (from 2012), but neither are English-friendly, according to the specs. I have not been able to find a review of either of them.

There is also a recent bluray of The Green Room that's come out in Germany. But not English-freindly I believe.

I wish Criterion would just get Jules and Jim out there - it's about time! Such a magnificent film!

Paul,

The Green Room (La Chambre verte)

I was astonished to see you mentioning a blu-ray version, so I did a bit of search.

From what I decipher here, Koch Media in Germany did announce a blu-ray, but eventually released a new DVD:

- French and German friendly

- Aspect ratio: 1.66 (compared to 1.33 in the cropped, awful MGM version)

I ordered it.

This thread is yet another reminder of why we must all own multi-region Blu ray players. Just take a look at Amazon.co.uk for the big bundles of BD Blu rays of Truffaut available in Britain.... I have them all.
