Hi,  i own a Denon 3312,  i'm trying to connect a pair of patio speakers to the Denon,  and be able to use it as a "switch" ,  to listen to music on the patio only, AND listen to them in conjunction with the main system, and vice versa when desired.  I'm just a little confused on whether to use 'amp assign" or 'zone 2' and what connections to make and settings to use.  Hope this isnt too confusing,  i know you will be able to help me,

Amp assign is in conjunction with Zone 2.Amp assign is nothing more than telling the AVR what you want a particular pair of amps to do.So connect your patio pair to the terminals "marked Zone 2"..and assign that amp pair as Zone 2. Should take a whole 2 minutes.
