Seems like I read somewhere that Apple was coming out with a universal remote.  Has anyone heard anything about this?

My Harmony 880 is getting long in tooth and the volume button is getting a little flakey.

Apple has a Remote app for iPhone and iPad, but it's for control of iTunes and AppleTV.

Seems unlikely. The market is too small. Apple doesnt need it; a single AppleTV that even takes IR remote signals. And Apple doesnt seem in the business of fixing other company's control system.

And if they did, I'd bet on it being an iPhone app, and not a dedicated gadget.

So if you want that, get the Logitech app. Or maybe this :

I thought I had read it would be a remote that could photograph your devices and would then download all the required codes based on the photographs.  Can't remember where I ran across this.

There are numerous third party universal remote apps, I am sure some of them include that feature.  Just do some googling.  Examples:
