Big Netflix title expiration list for May 1st 2013 (1 Viewer)

Just a heads-up, there's a big title dump coming in a little less than a month. Many of these are MGM-owned titles; Netflix isn't losing MGM completely (ala Starz), because there are other MGM titles debuting on their streaming service soon, like REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS and HOOSIERS. Whether some or all of these will return to Netflix in the near future, migrate to some other streaming service, or sit in limbo for a while, is anybody's guess.

This list I compiled for another forum, and is heavily skewed toward sci-fi/horror/fantasy/psychotronic material, with a few mainstream things here and there. Make your viewing plans accordingly:

I usually try to keep up every month with InstantWatcher.com which not only updates new arrivals but also keeps reasonably accurate calendars of what will expire when.

I usually check them every month--or, for fun, go through the queue on the PS3 app and see which titles are already marked for expiration in two weeks--but it's April, and I'd forgotten to.
Looks like a lot of mainstream MGM titles clearing room, but they usually come back--Should be interesting to see what comes in on May 1, as well.

That's pretty cool though that they also keep a "new" because it looks like a lot of different Marvel titles are coming on/etc.

Does anyone know where some of these streaming titles are going after May 1st? I'm interested in the British classics -- Two Cities, United Artists features that MGM owns (owned?). Thanks.

Slate.com even got on the fan-panic bandwagon, suggesting that Warner Instant Archive was stealing all the ThisTV MGM titles (Corman Poe, etc.) titles away.
Later, however, had to update with:

* Correction, 8:00 p.m.: This post previously said that movies from the Universal library would also become exclusive to Warner Archive Instant. They will not.

Update, 10:36 p.m.: A spokesperson for Warner Bros. insists that the launch of Warner Archive Instant is not responsible for the removal of films from Netflix’s streaming service. Joris Evers of Netflix writes in to say that Netflix often licenses movies on an exclusive basis and sometimes chooses not to renew less watched titles. He also notes that many of the movies expiring at midnight were part of a deal Netflix had with Epix.

That's pretty much what I guessed too--Some of the movies were just on annual license and will probably reappear in the fall, and some, like the Disney Marvel series, will float in and out irregularly. It's a Perfect Storm for annual expirations, but not the end of Netflix.

(So, what ABOUT this "deal with Epix"? I've noticed that their catalogues are almost identical, and Epix's deal has resulted in a lot of "real" recent mainstream movies showing up on Netflix, like Hunger Games and Captain America.
EpixHD just put out its own PS3 app, which suggests they might try and compete solo like StarzPlay did...Uh, guys, you'll be sor-reee! )

This whole thing was nothing but a black eye for how little most people really know about how most businesses work. It doesn't matter which companies it was involved, this goes to show you that people really would believe anything they read online. In 2013 it's embarresing that a lot of people really bought a conspircy theory over a very simple business concept that isn't exactly new. I hope some people take a moment to think about how silly they acted.

But on the bright side, this site shows a lot of us know better than to believe such things. Now if only the general Facebook and Twitter populations were more like HTF.

The entire thing was nothing more than a panic mission by those who want to say that streaming is evil and physical media is the only way to really watch movies. I hate to break it to people but that "big list" of titles often go away once or twice a year. They've gone away before but we're back for viewing within a month. Most of those talking about how evil it was for all these titles to be going away seem to have disappeared.

Most of the titles are back and there are even more cult titles that have been added.

I chalk the hubbub up to a slow news day more than anything else. The media knows that if they say that there's some kind of problem with Netflix, they'll get people to click on their 'news' story.

It's what I've now started calling the Slate.com Factor (given all the "3D is Dead! Hard disks are Dead!" tech/trend/scar articles Slate tries to post to kiss up to its tablet audience):
The mainstream press, which largely doesn't use the technology, being suddenly "shocked" by a big news item involving a tech trend other people use, seeing a comparatively common story reported for the first time, treating it like the End of the World, and causing other casual first-time users to gullibly believe it IS.

Most mainstream press articles had never heard of Netflix before the Qwikster blowup, and a few press manias later, it became a running gag on SNL.

A lot of the MGM titles came back.
