Yeah, I think I am going to go for this too.

What movies are missing from this that the big boxed set that came out last year had?

It's obvious that the studio is trying to offered a more streamlined set for the less hardcore fans, at a much lower price point.

Quite frankly, I would be inclined just to wait as long as it takes for an Amazon sale on the larger boxed set.  I'm not a huge Hitchcock fanatic, so I can wait for the price drop.   I could probably even get the imported version of the large boxed set for a little bit more than this new smaller set, I would bet.

Another release? Why?

Fewer movies, for those who want to spend less, and to showcase "The Essentials" I guess.  For the record, I think the five movies in this collection, are probably his most well known movies and probably do constitute "The Essentials".

I think Hitchcock's been done to death on Blu-ray and DVD though, it's like every year Universal re-releases the same titles out again.

I wouldn't say he's been 'done to death' on Blu with 'every year' releases.

In the fall of 2011 there were two titles on Blu-Ray. By the end of 2012, there were 25. Last year just happened to be an explosive (and welcome) year for us Sir Alfred fans.

Well, I'm not as big a fan as some here, but I definitely thought the cost of the large Hitch box set was prohibitive, and contained movies that I could live without, but this new streamlined release, hits exactly the Hitch movies that I would want on Bluray (save Rope), and so this smaller set definitely works for me.

Richard,

I completely understand.

If I were you, I would pounce on this set.  I am just wondering/hoping the larger set comes down in price by year's end and I am waiting to wait for that.

For me, it's frustrating because it's not precisely the titles I want and thus I will need to wait even longer for individual releases of the titles in this set that I do want.

There's virtually no chance that these 'new' discs are different from the ones in the Masterpiece set so unless you only wanted the 5 titles in this set, you're good with the first one.

Except for the films contained in the Essentials box set, all the other Hitchcock Blu Rays owned by Universal (I'm assuming in the same transfers that were in the big box) such as ROPE, SHADOW OF A DOUBT, SABOTEUR, THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY, etc. are available as individual Blu-rays at Amazon for $16.99 each. Though there is no release date as of yet, I believe they will be released around the same time as the Essentials set.

Since I bought Psycho and North by Northwest upon their original individual releases, I can wait for the same for Rear Window, Vertigo and The Birds.

"And now the reprimand, from an American critic. He reproaches me for using film as a sacred & lasting medium, like a painting or a book. He does not believe that filmmaking is an inferior art, but he believes, and quite rightly, that a reel goes quickly, that the public are looking above all for relaxation, that film is fragile and that it is pretentious to express the power of one's soul by such ephemeral and delicate means, that Charlie Chaplin's or Buster Keaton's first films can only be seen on very rare and badly spoiled prints. I add that the cinema is making daily progress and that eventually films that we consider marvelous today will soon be forgotten because of new dimensions & colour. This is true. But for 4 weeks this film [The Blood of a Poet] has been shown to audiences that have been so attentive, so eager & so warm, that I wonder after all there is not an anonymous public who are looking for more than relaxation in the cinema." - Jean Cocteau, 1932

I have the Masterpiece Collection, but I don't think it's a bad thing for this set to be released. Most people are only really interested in the 5 Hitchcock movies in this set, and at the moment, they can get it for roughly half the price of the larger boxed set. If that encourages more people to buy Hitchcock on blu and prove to Universal that his movies still have appeal, I'm all for it.

Personally though, I couldn't do without Marnie, The Man Who Knew Too Much or Rope, so no regrets on my part for buying the larger set. Surprisingly, the Masterpiece Collection is still selling at its launch price of $99 here in Australia, so I'm glad I didn't wait for it to drop.

The Man Who Knew Too Much, Marnie, Family Plot, Frenzy come to mind.

Funny you should mention those titles, as they had arguably the worst transfers of the lot.  The Essentials set is kind of doing the consumer a favor by not including them, especially since the 5 here have among the best transfers of the Masterpiece set.
