Ordered!

Kind of happy I never bought the trilogy boxed set as I only really liked the first film.

At least now I can buy the film in 3D and 2D Blu-ray.

I hope they didn't build the 3D version upon the master they used for the boxset.

"And now the reprimand, from an American critic. He reproaches me for using film as a sacred & lasting medium, like a painting or a book. He does not believe that filmmaking is an inferior art, but he believes, and quite rightly, that a reel goes quickly, that the public are looking above all for relaxation, that film is fragile and that it is pretentious to express the power of one's soul by such ephemeral and delicate means, that Charlie Chaplin's or Buster Keaton's first films can only be seen on very rare and badly spoiled prints. I add that the cinema is making daily progress and that eventually films that we consider marvelous today will soon be forgotten because of new dimensions & colour. This is true. But for 4 weeks this film [The Blood of a Poet] has been shown to audiences that have been so attentive, so eager & so warm, that I wonder after all there is not an anonymous public who are looking for more than relaxation in the cinema." - Jean Cocteau, 1932

I'm usually somewhat dubious of conversions (especially ones done decades after the fact) but having seen the trailer in 3-D last week, I'm pretty hopeful of the results.

I just pre-ordered this. One of my favorite films of the 90's, and in my top 3 movie going experiences of all time. How can I not get this? Now all I need is:

I emailed Universal to see if the 2D disc is getting the new transfer as well and it's not good news i'm afraid. :( This is what they said: Thank you for contacting us. The 2D Blu-ray and DVD releases to be included is our upcoming "Jurassic Park" 3D package will use the master that was created for the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy in 2011. We appreciate your interest and hope that you will continue to enjoy our releases. SIncerely, Consumer Relations UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOME ENTERTAINMENT

The 2011 set has a lot of DNR followed by EE. It looks very bad.

It's also littered with video noise and it's cropped. http://www.jurassic-...ic.php?pid=8314 You can see clearly see in this link that it's been cropped on all four sides.

I guess I missed the furor before - what's wrong with the 2011 transfer? I've got the box set but haven't looked at it yet lol.

Like so many other times on the internet, I think the problems have just become exaggerated over time. Or more specifically, while there's minor issues, people remember the negative more than the positive so when they think about the set, they remember it as being worse than it actually is. From the HTF review (where the set was "recommended")

All three films are presented in 1080p VC-1 transfers that are a pleasure to watch, retaining plenty of visible grain and showing a satisfying amount of detail. I’m marking slightly lower on the first film due to some minor edge enhancement issues that have been pointed out. The edge enhancement is so mild that you may need to really look for it – I couldn’t see it until it was pointed out, and that’s on a 65” screen. I had the evaluation checked on a 100+” projection screen with the same result. That said, there will be viewers who may find it distracting, and thus the slight count off there.

http://www.hometheat...iew-recommended As a counterpoint to that review, I'm sure there are people in that thread that refute the review and say how terrible the disc is.

Caps-a-holic has a comparison of the Blu-ray 3D to the Blu-ray. The Blu-ray has a lot more detail.

I already see people defending this release across the internet, they have to degrain 3D conversions, yes that's true but the best ones get a little grain put back in, think of the recent Top Gun release which looks more film like than the poor ( older master ? ) 2D presentation.

A good read about 2D to 3D conversions can be found below, indeed it's an excellent read.

I suppose I'm forgiving about grain in a 3-D conversion, i mean, once you've gone that far you are already altering the original. the 2-D is still there to be enjoyed grain and all...
