Will TV tuner cards that say "cable-TV ready" work on satellite-TV (like DirectTV)? If not, what sort of PCI or PCIe expansion card do I need for my custom-build? I intend to get rid of Comcast as soon as I get PC done, but I might get DirectTV later, and want PC to be ready...just in case!

Nearly 100% sure that TV Tuner card will not work with HTPC. DirecTV need to decode and tune via its own box and hardware. I'm not aware of any PC direct item that would allow you to do that directly through your PC. There are ways of PC controlling DIRECTV equipment or running the DirecTV signal throught the PC and distributing the signal, but you will have to have some DirecTV equipment involved.
