One of my absolute favorites. His work as Doc Elldridge in Evening Shade with Burt Reynolds was a scream. I had no idea his early life was filled with so much tragedy though. He will be missed. http://apnews.myway..../DA3CO4LO3.html.

He was a great character actor - always a welcome presence in whatever he did. R.I.P.

Three truths about movies, as noted by Roger Ebert:

* It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it.

* No good movie is too long, and no bad movie is short enough.

* No good movie is depressing, all bad movies are depressing.

Yes, he was one of thos reliable character actors who always did a fine job with whatever he was given. Enjoyed him in so many films and TV shows. I'm not sure I ever saw him on the stage though he did a lot of theater.

Still, he'll be much missed.

Ah, so sorry to hear this, I knew of his WWII service but never knew he survived the Malmeny massacre. I always enjoyed his performances, I think 'Tootsie' was one of his best. RIP.
