I figured maybe since this film is official we can put news into this thread rather than the Disney/Lucasfilm announcement one.
Apparently Collider is reporting a *rumor* that Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, Layer Cake, X-Men: First Class) is likely being lined up as the director Star Wars Episode VII. That's the reason why he's not directing X-Men: First Class sequel.

Their sources tend to be solid, but they are stressing it's a rumor. My reaction if true ...
I thought X-Men First Class was a solid flick, and I probably need to revist Kick-Ass, but it would seem that he has sufficient "geek credibility". I would be OK with this choice if true, I think it's a solid choice by Kennedy/Disney if true.
He also wrote X-Men First Class and the upcoming sequel, along with writing Stardust, Kick-Ass, so I would imagine if he is director he probably will be involved in the scriptwriting process and maybe just be given the overall reigns to the project. I think that's important, because the director doesn't really matter much if the script isn't solid.

More fuel to the Vaughn fire from Mark Millar's (comic book writer of Kick Ass) twitter seems to imply that Vaughn snuck onto the Empire Strikes Back set as an eight-year-old in Britain.
I'm not sure about these ones though:
Mark Millar ‏@mrmarkmillar
Just off the phone with my fave director & he's buzzing about this Star Wars thing, saying it's his dream gig. I told him to go for it.
Mark Millar ‏@mrmarkmillar
The only hint I'll give is that we've known each other 5 years and he sneaked onto the Dagobah set at Elstree when he was 8 years old.
They were posted on TheForce.Net but I don't see them directly on his Twitter feed. He does have a variation of the Vaughn sneaking onto the Elstree lot for ESB though.

I've been racking my brain for the perfect writer/director combo.
My best bet for episode 7 is:
Screenplay- Joss Whedon
Director- Ron Howard

I'd be fine withe Vaughn. X-Men: First Class is better than Avengers in my opinion, Avengers is fun on a popcorn level, but a bit of a mess plot-wise with no real strong theme and not much in the way of romance (and yes, I do think this is key to Star Wars, the OT did it right, the prequels failed utterly).
First Class ... excellent character relationships, solid romantic sub-plots, nice "character turn to the dark side", fairly coherent fantastical plot ... that type of thing could translate well to Star Wars.

I think whoever they cast should be virtual nobodys. We don't need a "lead" actor to sell the movie. I like how Trek picked new people.

And that is why I think Whedon would be a perfect fit. Whedon's Avengers was a fun popcorn movie that was very well done. However, It is absolutely not a representation of his best writing. That would be reserved for Firefly, Buffy , and Angel. Where his characters come to life, and the character development, and 'small moments' between them can(in my honest opinion) not be rivaled.
The Avnegers was Whedon making a big blockbuster film that would appeal to nearly everyone, and he was successful ina that way. He has also stated the next Avengers film will be smaller, more character driven.
I can only imagine what kind of fun he could have in a Star Wars sandbox.
By the way, I thought First Class was a really good film too.

I don't think you can make a Star Wars film that's just "fun", that is one aspect, but the story arc has to be there.
Besides Whedon is likely to be working on Avengers movies for a while.
Vaughn appears to be free now that he's off X-Men: First Class 2 (though he did write it). They need to get a director/writer onto the script ASAP in my opinion if they're going to make that summer 2015 window. The next year should be really spent on the script in particular.

This suggests that Vaughn may be doing Mark Millar's "Secret Service", which was the last rumor before the Star Wars rumor.

It definitely won't be Whedon since he's already committed to directing The Avengers 2 and is overseeing all of the Marvel Phase 2 films.

Confirmed by Deadline. Frankly, he's a brilliant potential pick. His screenplay for TS3 is brilliant and has some great SW homage material, but his adaptation of The Hunger Games is a great piece of writing. I think people who thought they might go one way have to look at this as pulling in someone who has the absolute writing creds for putting something great on the page.

Sold.
He's a good writer, I really loved Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine was solid. He apparently also uses the OT Star Wars in his screenwriting lectures and is a big Star Wars fan. Works for me.
If they find a competent director, I feel good about these films. The script is the most important aspect IMO, get that right and everything else will fall into place.
Just a note: he didn't write film adaptation for The Hunger Games, though he's writing the sequel though which is due next year. Also he's one of the writers on the Tom Cruise/Morgan Freeman 2013 sci-fi project, Oblivion.

Hmmm. IMDB gives him a credit on it, maybe he just did a treatment then.

I think the director could still be Vaughn.
He's free and available whereas a lot of the other choices being bandied about (Abrams, Brad Bird, etc.) appear not to be. And Spielberg is out.
He abruptly dropped out of X-Men: First Class 2, there's got to be something up with that.
Also Kennedy mentioned they are working with writers, as in plural, so perhaps they want Vaughn to be involved in the screenwriting process with Arndt. That would make the plurality of her statement make sense, as Vaughn is a writer too.
An Arndt (writer) + Vaughn (writer-director) combination for a new Star Wars trilogy would be quite good.

I'd be fine with Vaughn I suppose, but my local newspaper just did an article listing a bunch of suggestions for who could direct Episode VII, and besides Vaughn, they included Jon Favreau as a potential choice for a director. I gotta say I really dig that possibility. I like Favreau's stuff much more than Vaughn, not to knock him or anything. But I think Favreau is my #1 personal choice.
