Digital Digest: The Donna Reed Show Season 5 DVD News; The Streets of San Francisco - Season 4 (Volume 1 and Volume 2) DVD Review; Kojak - Season Five DVD Review
Welcome to Digital Digest! This week, the news is painfully slow... but we've got a double review weekend with our reviews of The Streets of San Francisco - Season 4 (Volume 1 and Volume 2) as well as Kojak - Season Five. And if you've been following our blog for the past few weeks, you'll know that we have a new blog feature which we're going to unveil this week... keep reading and you'll find our new feature, Follow Me, at the end of today's blog!
DIGITAL NEWS
We've stumbled upon a very slow news week this week, but there has been one major highlight for fans of one of the "original" classic sitcoms. This week, Mary Owen announced on the We Love The Donna Reed Show Facebook page that the fifth season of The Donna Reed Show is scheduled to be released on December 4. Of course, Owen is certainly "in the know" on these issues... after all, she is the daughter of Donna Reed and she is also the one who licensed the DVD rights to MPI! Still, we must stress that while we have no doubt that this set will likely be released soon, MPI has been known to slightly delay some DVD releases, and the December 4 date may not be set in stone yet. But we'll let you know more when we know more!

DONNA REED RETURNS IN SEASON FIVE OF HER HIT SHOW, WINNING THE GOLDEN GLOBE FOR BEST ACTRESS IN A TV COMEDY SERIES! Originally airing on ABC-TV from 1958-1966, THE DONNA REED SHOW became one of the most popular family situation comedy series in television history during its eight-season run.
Starring Academy Award-winning actress DONNA REED (From Here To Eternity, It's A Wonderful Life) as homemaker Donna Stone, CARL BETZ as her pediatrician husband Alex, SHELLEY FABARES as daughter Mary and PAUL PETERSEN as son Jeff, THE DONNA REED SHOW is a humorous and heartwarming slice of Americana that earned a legion of new fans in reruns on Nick At Nite and TV Land. PATTY PETERSEN, Paul's sister in real-life, joins the cast in the fifth season as newly adopted daughter Trisha.
THE DONNA REED SHOW SEASON 5 debuts on DVD with all 34 episodes complete and digitally remastered. Among the guest stars are Harvey Korman, Bob Crane, Harold Gould, Jimmy Hawkins, Don Drysdale, Paul Winchell, Jim Davis, Janet Langard, James Stacy, Hayden Rorke and Richard Deacon. Includes the hit songs My Dad by Paul Petersen and Big Star by Shelley Fabares!
MPI Home Video has today announced that December 4th will see the release of Donna Reed Show - Season 5 on DVD. The 5-disc set running 870 minutes will cost $39.98 SRP. Cover art is below. The 34-epsiode collection will include bonus material, but no details have been divulged yet about those extras. Stay tuned for updates!

Now, don't get me wrong--I love this show so much and am SO grateful for MPI picking up the DVD rights, I'd buy it in a plain brown wrapper, but this cover art isn't too thrilling. S4's cover art was gorgeous, this one suffers from bad color choices IMO. Hunter green AND avocado? Mixed with pink and yellow? It just looks so unappealing because the colors are a bad mix. Anyway, that gripe aside, can't wait for this set.

I don't mind the colors and the fans of this show on the "We Love The Donna Reed Show" page seem pleased. Overall, I find it to be a very interesting and entertaining DVD Cover!

The previous covers were alright, but at least this cover forces people to take notice whether they like it or not! :) Actually they are on a ride at an amusement park!! J/K :D

Aside from the Cover Art, I am very excited about this 'Season 5' release! The episodes are top notch. For example, "The Chinese Horse" which is a great Mystery Episode. And the "House on the Hill" episode, with Donna being held against her will. "The Big Wheel" episode, with the large bus stuck in front of the Stone's House. The "My Dad" episode where Paul Petersen performs his hit song, "My Dad" that is still popular today. And the "Big Star" episode, featuring a shy Elvis like singer, and then Shelley Fabares singing the song number "Big Star" at the end of this episode. The "Baby Buggy" episode, with the gruff elderly woman doctor who has a heart of gold and drives a very small dilapidated old car around town, and who just loves delivering babies, played by the very talented actress Fay Bainter. "The Makeover Man" episode about Mary's very ill mannered boyfriend. The "Pioneer Woman" episode with Donna and Mary roughing it in a very beat up cabin and the great outdoors. Also, the "Where The Stones Are" episode, which concentrates on Donna, Alex, and Jeff who are spying on Mary, and in the meantime, Donna is trying to catch an incredibly gigantic fish which looks more like a whale!!! The "Mrs. Stone And Dr. Hyde" episode, where Donna takes over as Alex's Nurse and Alex seems to her to be a Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type of personality. Also the episode, "Everywhere That Mary Goes" with the guy named Clovis that is built like a house who follows Mary everywhere. And in this same episode, the younger guy named Emory who takes revenge on Mary by putting a 'For Sale Sign' in front of the Stone's house all because Mary doesn't want anything to do with him and refuses to go out with him. And many more great episodes from "The Donna Reed Show" are included in this 'Season 5' DVD Set. I Can't Wait!!

That helps explain what they're doing. My first thought was: what an odd pose. It's like somebody said, "Let's line our rocking chairs up like a choo choo train!"
So was the picture originally taken outdoors? Then, it is obvious that their images were super-imposed onto a new background. That green color is hideous! Also the lighting is weird because the light seems to be hitting their faces on the left side and their right side is in shadows.
Oh, well. I'm just glad season 5 is finally being released, but I think MPI could have done better. This looks like their old Virgil Film's artwork.

I was just kidding Ron about them being on a ride at an amusement park! This is why I had put J/K after my comment. In my mind when I saw this DVD Cover, I just thought that it had looked as if they were on some type of a ride. :)
