Lionsgate will bow theatrical hit The Hunger Games as its first UltraViolet release on Aug. 18.
In an Aug. 10 conference call with analysts, CEO Jon Feltheimer said the teen fantasy film, which has generated more than $683 million at the box office, would be available through UltraViolet channels such as Walmart's Vudu and Flixster.com the Warner Bros.-owned movie recommendation website and conduit for the cloud-based industrywide digital locker. A code for accessing an UltraViolet copy of the film would be included with copies of the film on disc.
Now we just need MGM and Disney to get in.

I have to give kudos to Lionsgate for two things:

  1. Offering both iTunes & UV digital copies. Thank you for joining Universal & Paramount in giving consumers a choice.

  2. Providing the HD version as well as the SD version of the film. This is the first digital copy I've run into that included the HD version.

Yep, giving customers choice is good. I will admit, they really did good work with this release; the Vudu HDX copy looks damn good, frankly on the PS3 at least. The disc itself is excellent. But I enjoyed the movie a lot so there is that..
