What's a brutha gotta do to get a Whedon-produced Damage Control TV show?
Although, they're talking 2015 for this one. Whedon's got a lot of free time with which to do something awesome with his Fuck You™ money from Avengers 2.
(That reminds me: We still don't have a date for his Much Ado About Nothing, do we?)

I was a Marvel comic reader during the golden age of comics, and I'm liking that some of these things are being brought to the screen, but I don't really see how this can be great. I hope I'm wrong, but what truly compelling superhero TV shows have we seen? Heroes was probably my favorite, and we see how that went. Alphas is just watchable. Nothing compelling about it. Smallville was a saturday morning cartoon. Enjoyable for that, but not much more. No Ordinary Family? I'm sure there are some I haven't seen, but that in itself might say something. So far, movies do this a lot better (I even enjoyed Hancock, and to some degree Chronicle).
Joss has earned the right to do this if he wants to, but if it works, I'll be pleasantly surprised. Mostly I just don't think the number of people who'll stick with something like this will bring in enough money to justify the cost of doing the show decently. The more people they need to watch on a weekly basis, the more watered down it'll get. Bah. Show BUSINESS getting in the way of my show.
(Wierd. There are carriage return/new lines/paragraphs in my post, but they don't show after save. When I edit, they're back, but when I save, they're gone again.)

I would guess that the show will focus on non-superpowered characters, like SHIELD agents, with the superpowered folk on the periphery.

It's funny, because the vast majority of live-action superhero TV series ever produced have almost always left me with a puke-taste in my mouth (up to, and including, Smallville), but this news actually somewhat makes me potentially interested again, execution depending. I'll give Whedon a fair chance, especially if he keeps it smaller-scale.

The show will be entitled S.H.I.E.L.D.
So that pretty much answers that. The pilot will by written by Whedon with his bother Jed Whedon ("Spartacus", "Dollhouse") and Jed's wife Maurissa Tancharoen ("Spartacus", "Dollhouse"). If he can fit it into his schedule, he'll also direct the pilot. Jeffrey Bell ("Angel", "Alias", "Harper's Island") and Jeph Loeb ("Smallville", "Heroes") will executive produce along with Whedon. Loeb gets an executive producer credit as Marvel TV's representative. Presumably Bell would be the day-to-day showrunner if the ABC decides to take the pilot to series.

Well, SHIELD has potential, but if we're gonna have a Marvel TV show, I want some superheroes dangit! Somehow this concept seems too broad and too limiting at the same time if that makes any sense. In order for a concept as big as SHIELD to work, they would probably have to focus on a smaller ensemble in the organization, maybe a unit focused on bringing down supervillain threats? That would actually open up the universe a bit to throw in many of the Marvel villains who would otherwise never make it into any of the big films. Who would be the lead though? Obviously, Nick Fury is out, although I suppose it's not outside the realm of possibility that Samuel L. Jackson would do an occasional cameo. The article mentions that production starts immediately, so I guess Colbie Smulders as Maria Hill is out of the question, since HIMYM has at least one more season. We know Joss likes female leads, so maybe Carol Danvers would be a good lead agent for the show. Neal McDonaugh as Dum Dum Dugan would be awesome as well.
I guess the more I think about it, I'm getting more okay with this idea. I've mentioned in another thread that Daredevil would be my personal choice for a Marvel TV series, I trust Whedon and crew to come up with something awesome. I'll be watching whatever it ends up being.

I like the writing staff a lot. Depending on how this goes, this could be a hell of a lot of fun, with characters that build up and are available for film cameos or subplots/roles.. and they give the audience a much deeper story for the film franchises. I think picking the SHIELD agency could be a great move.. have them investigate all the possible high risk threats, discover things about the hero/elite types etc. The more I think about this, the more I think this could be very cool.

Yes, this is a really cool way to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are so many possibilities with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Joss on the show:

It was just announced that you're co-writing a TV series set in Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, and you may direct the pilot, schedule permitting. After all the network conflicts you've had with your other shows, how does it feel to finally be working on a project that may very well get the biggest promotional push of any TV show ever and will most likely not air on a Friday?
[Laughs.] You know, I can't guarantee that any of that will happen! But so far, it feels just fine. The important thing to me is that we know what the show is. We love what it is. It came together very organically, so when we went in to pitch [to Marvel], it wasn't like, We're trying to find this because you want a TV show, it was, Check this out. And that's a good way to walk in a room.
Good support is wonderful, but it's not a hill of beans, because they may give us all this support and then decide, "Eh. Yeah, it's Friday." They might give us all the support and then not do that, but then audiences might go, "Yeahhh … no." You just can't be sure. What I do know is that it's the show it should be, and we've got some really dope notions. It's going to work very well for people who either love the Marvel universe or for people who've never dipped a toe in the Marvel universe.

Uhm, that leaves me really pumped about this. Having it be something that Jed, Mo & Joss pitched rather then someone writing a script because they were asked instantly ups my interest level. It tells me the writers had an idea first, and this isn't an easy paycheck but a project they want. I am instantly interested.

Here's a brief interview with Joss about the show.
Apparently, it's relatively far along in the development process. It also will follow "new characters", which makes sense. I don't think anyone should have realistically expected Iron Man and Captain America to be in the show. After all, they're super heroes, not shield agents. I'd imagine the main cast will be all non-superpowered shield agents. I also wouldn't expect Natasha Romanov or Barton since they are in the films. I wouldn't be surprised at the occasional Nick Fury cameo, but I don't expect him to be a regular part of the show.
"It's new characters. It needs to be its own thing," said Whedon. "It needs to be adjacent [to the movies] but you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.' You want them to do their own thing."
I'd imagine the "new characters" are still characters from the comic books, just not characters we've already seen in the MCU.

I would guess the the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are TV original characters, but they'll interact with established comics characters that maybe aren't on the radar of the movies.
The biggest question in my mind is whether they'll be able to lock down Samuel L. Jackson for a few appearances each season. I hope they don't recast Nick Fury for the show.

In yet another interview....
We’re excited you’re doing another television series, let alone “S.H.I.E.L.D.” Will there be room for Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford on “S.H.I.E.L.D.” after they were in Item 47?
I honestly don’t think they’re available because I think she’s on another show. We’re building it with a new group of people. They were great and that had a lot to do with why we’re making the show, but we’re starting fresh.
Are you planning to do the season-long story arcs you’re good at rather than the weekly standalone episodic format?
It’s going to be a very standalone show. We’ll do what we always do which is every episode will conclude and you’ll have taken away your story, but there will be a through line running throughout. It will not be in the foreground but as in all of these shows, it will probably take foreground at some point, many seasons down the road God willing.

Another possibility is that he appears in flashbacks.
I like the character, so I'd be happy if they honored the classic comic book traditon of bringing characters back from the dead.

Interesting. In this article, Whedon says Gregg is headlining the show. So it's either pre-Avengers or they're bringing him back. I really hope it's the latter.

"There was never going to be a 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' show without Agent Phil Coulson!" said Feige, who appeared behind Whedon a Coulson Lives shirt.
"He's headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was." said Whedon.
Loeb confirmed Clark Gregg is the first member cast in Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D."
