This will be my first real set up. Is the older Denon a better product or the newer Onkyo? There is a Denon for sale on Craigs List for 500.00 used with the receiver only or I can get a HTIB Onkyo for around 350.00 new with speakers. Whitch direction should I go? Thanks Lawrence

That depends... Do you care about 3D? That 3806 is "before" AVR were decoding DTS HD-MA/Dolby True HD...so you have to have a BD player that decodes them. Can you survive on two HDMI? If that $500 doesn't include the remote or the "set-up mic", he's asking $85 and $40(respectively) too much...on top of the fact he's probably on the high side by $50.

I dont have a 3d tv so I really dont care about that. Is the Denon too out dated? How is that Onkyo though?

In "car terms"... That Onkyo is a 2012 Toyota Yaris. That Denon is a 1997 Audi A8. (long in tooth and missing features that the Yaris "might have" only cause the Yaris is so much newer) But I'd take that Denon. The only "other issue" is it might not have any upscaling...or it probably only upscales to 1080I(which only matters if you plan to watch VHS, play Wii or watch the Military channel). Edit: according to Crutchfield...the 3806 does have up-conversion. It does have(as far as I know) up-conversion. Many people confuse upscale and up-conversion. Up-conversion is taking all sources and sending the video out HDMI to your TV (a feature I don't think the Onkyo HTiB has) Upscaling is taking 480i/p and making it "look" 720P, 1080I/P.

Before I "bought" the 890... I'd choose the 2311(around another $150 more, last I checked A4L) or even this one... http://www.accessori...Receiver/1.html If you are willing to pay a little extra, have no idea what the "user experience" is with these...but...if the specs are real...wowser... http://www.accessori...D-DTS-HD/1.html But at A4L, anything between that 890 posted above and this Sherwood...between those two prices, there isn't a bad choice to be had...and Onkyo, at the same price, have more features than Denon.
