Now that we have MAD WORLD and MAG MEN on blu, it's time for a release of GREAT RACE.This would look great in high def, with lush cinematography by Russell Harlan and music from Henry Mancini.

Absolutely! I'd be second in line for a release of Great Race on Blu. Of course, I'd also appreciate a wider release of Magnificent Men I could import (and while we're at it a Blu (smilebox?) of Around The World In Eighty Days)

Very happy to sign that petition. The Great Race is a great looking movie that totally works for me now every bit as much as it did in 1965. I still find it laugh out loud funny in a way I don't with Those Magnificent Men. I think it's one of the 60's jewels in Warner's crown, along with Harper & a few others. But I don't want to give Warner a hard time, as they're the best studio for catalogue releases & I'm sure they'll get round to this.

Yes, definitely, Natalie Wood was never more beautiful than in The Great Race, even though we see more of her in Gypsy - another hint to Warners - and now thinking of Rosalind Russell let's have Auntie Mame, too - these are all colorful, well photographed films that will look great on blu-ray.

Sorry Guys, I'd take films like "Bonfire of the Vanities" over the "The Great Race" or "Auntie Mame" any day, and Warner is releasing that film in the fall. Good to see their priorities are in the right place. These old relics never sell and are so dated

Sales are rarely an indication of quality, and let's not forget that Bonfire was a bomb on initial release.

And we also have on Blu the lesser of the super comedy quartet, THOSE DARING YOUNG MEN IN THEIR JAUNTY JALOPIES [Monte Carlo or Bust), although the transfer Paramount provided wasn't too good and the sound was just stereo and I don't think in high resolution. (It is double billed with HOUDINI) At least it is the longer, British cut.
My order of favorites are:
IT'S MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD
THE GREAT RACE
THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES
THOSE DARING YOUNG ME IN THEIR JAUNTY JALOPIES
so THE GREAT RACE would fill in a big gap in my BluRay collection.

MONTE on Blu-ray is full HD and if I may say so quite spanking. I have the same wish list for epic comedies, and if I could source a reasonably priced Blu of Magnificent Men and a copy of Great Race I would be a happy clam. I'd like to again nominate Around The World In 80 Days (1956) in addition.

And add to that list VICTOR, VICTORIA. Yes I know it's been inexplicably released into the WB Archive as an MOD release but it really deserves a Blu-Ray!!!!

Totally agree. I don't want to overly knock MAG MEN which I did enjoy on its first release but it hasn't stood the test of time well. I find GREAT RACE far more entertaining. It has a much more starry, talented and attractive cast and has more of a big budget appearance. It looked fabulous in Cinerama. In comparison, MAG MEN has a much more cheaper look about it (in fact the budget was half that of GREAT RACE)

Disagree about Mag Men but interested, Doug that you saw Race at the Coliseum in London. From memory it was not advertised as being in Cinerama and if it was shown that way, it would make it the first "blow up " in Cinerama. Eventually caught a 70mm showing when it was brought back to the Casino and thought the quality too good for a blow up.
In my investigations, I saw in the American Photographer magazine ( no less) that it was shot in " Super Panavision 70". Most authorities these days say 35mm but do you have any thoughts?

Could not agree more - both "Great Race" and "Auntie Mame" would look delicious on Blu-ray. The quality of the current DVDs for both titles is particularly strong, so the elements are probably in good shape for a Hi Def incarnation.
Yes, Natalie is at her loveliest in this film, although the filming of the project wasn't an altogether happy experience for her. I think the character of Maggie DuBois, the spirited, scheming suffragette/journalist is one of her greatest roles. And the clothes - WOW!

The film had the misfortune to be released the same year as Doctor Zhivago (which won Best Costume Design), but Edith Head's clothes for Natalie (plus the hilarious, sometimes elaborate outfits that Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis don during the film) would surely have won in another year. Head was actually nominated for another Wood/WB film that year - Inside Daisy Clover rather than The Great Race.

John - I assumed that THE GREAT RACE was a genuine 70mm film when I first saw it in Cinerama at the London Coliseum. I was surprised to read years later that it was a blow up. The featurette with the DVD clearly shows the cameras in use so someone should know what type of cameras they are!
