Who is still using there HD-DVD player?
So anyone out there ditched there HD-DVD player yet? Once in a while I will turn on my Toshiba HD-A1 and watch a HD-DVD. Today I watched the original Superman The Motion Picture and it started stuttering and pausing. I checked the disc and it did it again, then I unplugged the power and reset it and it played past the area I had trouble then started doing it again. It will not send video out via HDMI and I am thinking about a few options.
1. Just tossing the Superman HD-DVD disc.
2. Tracking down a used HD-DVD player that is not a first generation player.
3. Taking the Toshiba HD-A1 and all 69 HD-DVD titles and dropping them all in the trash.
The problem is without the player there is no need to keep the movies and I might as well just trash the discs and slowly repurchase everything on Blu-ray disc. This player has had this same issue on and off the entire time I have owned it even with all the firmware updates.
So does anyone still even use there HD-DVD player anymore? Just wondering how many people still watch HD-DVD?

I still use mine occasionally. I never had a problem with mine. In fact, I bought another to have as a backup. Both are HD-A2's.
I'll take the HD-DVD's off your hands, instead of the garbage.

I will let you know if I decide to wash my hands of the HD-DVD format. I am thinking about bidding on a Onkyo DV-HD805 HD-DVD player on E-Bay but I am not sure. If I shit can the player I will let you know about the movies.

I haven't used my HD-DVD player in quite a while (but I'll probably keep it for nostalgia if nothing else.) I'm posting in the thread because some of my Warner Bros. discs began experiencing playback issues. (Lethal Weapon 1, The Searchers, and the first Harry Potter film all immediately come to mind.) I mention this because if you have any Paramount or Universal discs in your HD-DVD collection you might want to consider spinning one of them to see if the problem is repeatable.
The last Universal discs I viewed were okay (Dune, and something else?)

You need a fourth entry in your poll: Switch to your backup (Like Jim I have a 2nd player).

And to anyone who is thinking of getting out of HD-DVD: Do NOT trash your discs! If you can't find anyone here on HTF to take them, you can trade them in on Amazon. You won't get rich (many discs will bring only a dime or a quarter), but you'll get something, and you'll keep them from going into a landfill.

I still use my Samsung HD player for Apollo 13 and The Sting because I am not happy with the blu-ray versions of those titles. However, when I watched The Sting recently to compare to the new blu-ray, it skipped a whole section of the movie, which it had never done before, and when I tried to put another disc in it was unresponsive and I had to unplug it and then it seemed to work normally. I checked the disc and it was not dirty, so that wasn't the problem. I only have about 10 HDs, and I have replaced all with the blu-ray versions (the Warner titles through the blu conversion program). If the player dies I will probably just let it go, although I really do prefer The Sting on HD as it looks much more like film to my eye than the blu-ray.
I have also heard that HD-DVD discs may be subject to some kind of rot, has anyone else heard that?

All these replies and I'm the only one that has voted so far?
Anyway, I have a Toshiba HD-XA2 and it is my first choice when I want to watch a standard DVD.
I still have some HD DVDs and still watch some of them occasionally but if the player died I wouldn't replace it. I'd just sell them or get rid of them is some manner and move on from there.

None of those options apply to me because I have two extra players that have never played a disc yet.

I would buy a player from someone. I like having the option, even though I have replaced most of my HD's with blu's. Plus, every now and then I find some amazing bargain, last weekend I happened upon a copy of KING KONG (2007) on HD-DVD for $.01 at a garage sale down the street - can't go wrong there, even if you only get one viewing out of it. Like someone else said, I still prefer the HD-DVD of THE STING over the blu. So far my player is still working OK.

While on the subject of HD-DVD, does anyone know of a software player for computer? Power DVD no longer supports HD-DVD. Thanks -

I would toss it since I only have a handful that I would need it for.
Btw if a mod wanders in here maybe the spelling could get fixed in The title from "there" to. "their".

There are still forums dedicated to HD-DVD over at http://www.avsforum.com/ that may have the answers you need. Thanks to them, my LG BH-200 combo player is still worth keeping.

Finally got off my rear and started poking around the HD-A1 to get the HDMI to work. Finally video and sound via HDMI ! There is something messed about this player though. When the audio is set to bitstream the multi channel icons do not light up while the movie is playing. So it is not telling me if the movie is 5.1 or 6.1 and the display's small pcm lights up. The receivers display will not tell me Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby True HD! If I change the audio to PCM then the display on the receiver says PCM 96K and the 5.1 symbols light up. If I got back to component video with the toslink digital then the audio is transcoded to DTS and the 5.1 logo lights up. I am going to seriouly think about buying another used HD-DVD player to replace this one and till then I will just use the component video and digital cable unless I get another cable and set it to PCM out! This player is a pain in my rear!

So is the Toshiba HD-A2 or the Onkyo BD-SP809 the better HD-DVD player?
What one is going to give me bit stream audio via HDMI for both Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA? My Pioneer Elite decodes everything so far but not from the Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player. If I had the cash I would just buy all Bluray replacements for the HD-DVD titles and be done with the HD-DVD format!

I'm still using my HD-A30 occasionally, and I have about a dozen HD-DVD titles on the shelf. When it finally dies I'm done with the format.

I still watch HD-DVD titles, and I'm yet to watch many of the 58 HD-DVD titles I own (although I've seen most of the movies in other formats), just watched “The Pianist” “Sky captain..” and “Hustle and flow” for the first time ever a few weeks back with no playback issues, I intent to keep the discs for a while longer until both my players die-off (A-20 and Costco D-3 model) but probably never replace any of these players again and quit the format.
I waited to long and was sorry to see WB's Red-2- Blu program cancelled, but in another thread here I recently discovered a different option, Walmart will convert your HD-DVD titles to Ultraviolet HD versions for $2.00, if I understand the Ultraviolet site correctly, you can always download the flick and burn to Blu disc with the proper setup.

I tried playing a couple of DVD's on my Costco Toshiba HD-D2 and the player had problems. I've hardly used it, and the DVDs were new. I'm a little disappointed.

This was the case with me until I got the Oppo 93. I haven't watched an HD-DVD in a long, long time, but I will be breaking it out soon for Batman Begins. I also own an LG combo player and a internal computer drive that plays them.

May I ask what software you use to play them on your computer drive? Thanks!
