http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Real-McCoys-The-Complete-Series/17032 This is both good news and bad news. Great that it is finally going to be completed. Bad news in that I already bought seasons 1 through 4 and do NOT want to buy them all over again tio get the entire series. This sucks.

That is crummy. I hope they release Season 5 and six separately. I only have Season 1. Glad I never bought the rest.

Wow! I'd missed that announcement! Looks like I'll be getting this instead of the re-released S1 like I'd originally planned. This is one I just put off purchasing for various reasons and was really irritated with myself for having done so when the original sets went OOP. Looks like I may have screwed up in reverse! :)

Since nothing has been said to the contrary I assume these are the same cut episodes that have been previously released with the addition of previously unreleased seasons which will also be cut for syndication.

I may pick up this set. I recall watching the show during its initial run, but some of the episodes -- like those of most of Pete and Gladys -- are quite fuzzy since I haven't seen them in over fifty years.

I assume the same. If they ever put out 5 & 6 (which is awful by the way) separately, I might pick them up but I'm not re-buying just like I didn't re-buy Route 66.

I really do wish they would release these uncut. There has been no official word whether it will be or not. If it's released as uncut episodes I'll buy in a minute. I already bought the first 4 seasons and am not thrilled with buying all again if edited. But I would like to get official releases of Seasons 5 & 6. Luckily though, I am not living without, no matter what the company releases. I was smart enough to record these when TNN used to run them on weekdays and I've already transferred them to DVD. But the TNN versions were the syndicated versions, that's why I hope this time "the powers that be" release these UNCUT. The series did change in the last season, Kate died!!! inexplicably, other than Grandpa announcing once Luke is now a widower. At one point Luke's going with a brunette girl with Eddie Munster as her child, Eddie & Luke though get along and just when you get used to these new characters they disappear too. Not to mention Grandpa is also MIA for most of the season. But in the end, I'd still buy this set, because it's one of my favorite series. I was really thrilled when I discovered (quite by accident as I was looking over a TV Guide) that Real McCoys was being broadcast on TNN. I started recording the next day. Several years later I transferred them to DVD in epis. guide order. But the last time I had seen Real McCoys was back in the '60's, a 30 year wait before they returned to TV! It is a good show in spite of the last season's changes.

How did Kate Die? Did the actress die?

Tory,
I believe it was the character who was killed off in the series due to a few factors, one of which was a contract dispute which was occurring during that season. Perhaps others can shed light on this, as I am only going by what I've read in a few online resources.

Interesting, was she the first major starring sitcom character to die? I have looked into it, seems so shocking that they killed her off, sent the daughter to college, the son to the army and the Grampa randomly appears. The show sounds unrecognizable. I'd still like to see the full run though.

Tory,
I don't know who would have been the first major starring sitcom character to die, but I have to admit that it crossed my mind as well, especially since the series aired so long ago. That's actually a very interesting question. I'm fairly certain someone on the HTF Board would know the answer to it.

Well, they killed off Danny Williams wife, Margaret, after 3 seasons of Make Room For Daddy. That was in 1956.

They never explained how she died. It was just mentioned in one of the episodes by Grandpa, "now that you're a widower..." that was it. No explanation, maybe Kate was kicked by a horse. The actress (who's still alive, by the way) was actually seriously injured when a horse she was riding in one of the episodes threw her off. That's why Kate disappeared for so many episodes in one of the later seasons, she was recovering with a bad back. I do recall that in one episode it was said that Luke's been "a widower for over a year now" so that at least told the audience something. The whole family was gone, as explained above. Only Luke was a regular character and Grandpa showed up in some episodes too. Jack Okie was brought on as a semi-regular playing Luke's uncle, so he replaced Grandpa's role in those episodes. Then Grandpa would pop back in the show and Okie would be just as mysteriously missing without explanation. I even remember in one of the last season episodes Luke talks about going to town to buy a present for Kate!! And she's already supposed to be dead! I read somewhere they did that so that program could be included in the syndicated package to make more episodes if the 6th season wasn't shown. It was a very mixed up season, but surpisingly still had good stories and interesting new characters even if they did disappear once you got used to them. George was still there once in a while, but his sister was gone, no explanation again. At any rate, it sounds like a mess, but it all seems to work out well, it's still funny, just don't think too much about what you're seeing or try to be logical.

Yes, Margaret Williams was the first sitcom character to die. The story goes that Jean Hagen couldn't stand Danny Thomas and quit the series, and in revenge, Danny had her character killed, rather than having a new performer take the part, as they did on "Bewitched" many years later.

These are the edited for syndication versions. I e-mailed the company sometime back after the announcement and they replied that they were the edited. Their claim is that the 35mm masters no longer exist. Neil said in another thread (Is the B & W era on DVD slowly coming to an end thread) that the 35mm masters DO exist but they've never been transferred to tape or any other format. According to Neil, when TNN went to syndicate the show there were apparently not tape masters made for the unedited shows. I know I'll catch flack from some, but I refuse to buy edited episodes. Yes, I realize the expense involved in transferring the original 35mm negatives wouldn't make it worthwhile. I have some episodes on VHS from a local channel run back in the late 80's that will suit me fine if I get the urge to watch it.

Do you have any reason for saying that other than the passage of time?
Not really , but it doesn't seem promising that there's been no news at all about the "Complete" release or any further season sets. I hope I'm wrong, because I really like this show and was looking forward to getting the last 2 seasons even if it meant
"double dipping " on seasons 1-4, and getting syndicated 23 minute episodes.Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I remember how sad it was, as a kid, when the 1957 episode of LASSIE "Transition" opened with the death of Gramps, and ended with Jeff leaving the series and giving Lassie to Timmy.
